Saturday Night Live took a stab at a recent incident involving a Bryan man accused of injuring two roommates with a sword during a dispute.
The NBC program Saturday featured the Sept. 17 incident on "Weekend Update," an entertaining take on headlines from around the globe.
With a graphic behind him featuring Texas and referring to the "Sword Attack in Texas," host Seth Meyers mentioned that the episode took place in the Lone Star State, but didn't identify the suspect or the city where it happened.
Meyers was mocking what prompted the fight: Police said Michael Angel Zamago, 20, came home and noticed a soda can in his room that wasn't there earlier, so he confronted his roommates about who might have been in his room.
He later told police one came after him with a metal rod, while the roommates said he charged at them, cutting one below the armpit and the other in the chest area, court documents state. The injuries were considered minor.
Zamago's roommates, Pepe Barrera and Zareh Zargarian, said Zamago poked holes in the door to a room that the pair locked themselves in for protection. Barrera described the sword as large and resembling a weapon seen in the movie Lord of the Rings.
Zamago was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. That same day, The Eagle ran a story about the incident on its Web site. Since then the article has been published by several other news sources, including The Associated Press.
The headline for the Eagle article, "Man accused of sword attack after finding soda can," was featured a few days later on http://storyofman.tumblr.com, a Web site that publishes humorous headlines taken from national news.
Barerra and Zargarian, both 18 and Blinn College students, told the newspaper Sunday afternoon that they didn't see the Saturday Night Live episode the night before.
"I think it's funny," said Zargarian, who received the small wound under his armpit.
Since the incident, Zamago has been kicked out of his apartment, his roommates said. They said they have not heard from him since his arrest.
The criminal case is pending against Zamago, who was charged with a second-degree felony. He posted $5,000 bail Saturday and couldn't be reached for comment.
