Kolache bake show canceled; fest isn't

Burleson County authorities Friday canceled the Kolache Bake Show scheduled for Saturday but said the festival was expected to go on as planned.

Also called off are the 5K Krunch run, the kolache eating contest, tractor event and car show. For T-shirt refunds from the run, call the Burleson County 4-H Club at 567-2308.

Caldwell Mayor and festival Chairman Bernard Rychlik said officials planned to move many events indoors but visitors would be able to find kolaches Saturday "come rain or shine." Events will be in the courthouse, Civic Center or other public buildings.

"It's a sign of the tenacity of the Czech heritage people," he said. "Caldwell and the Kolache Festival have become synonymous."

Officials initially estimated that 25,000 guests would attend the festival, but that number will be significantly smaller because of Hurricane Ike. Many vendors from the Texas coast area who were set to attend the festival have canceled, officials said.
