Two local high school seniors were chosen to represent the state to study the government and participate in politics.
The teenagers from A&M Consolidated High School and American Legion Post 159 left Friday for Washington, D.C., to spend a week after being selected from more than 700 students from across the state.
Kalyan Venkatraj and Aadil Razvi underwent long interviews to participate in the Boys State program, answering questions on topics ranging from the Constitution to individual approaches to situations.
Boys State is a summer educational program of state government instruction for high school students, and Boys Nation focuses on the federal government. The citizenship and government program works to instill practical insight into the operation of the federal government.
Venkatraj was named the winner of the Samsung scholarship to use at Texas A&M University. He belongs to the National Honor Society and is a returning member of the tennis team, the student council and the speech and debate team.
Razvi carries a 3.9 GPA and is a returning member of the Business Professionals of America, the Robotics team and the Young Democrats.
