More CS sites may see smoking limits

It may soon be more difficult to light up in College Station.

The City Council voiced support Thursday for tighter regulations on smoking in public places such as restaurants and bars.

The city's current smoking ordinance allows smoking in bars, and between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. in smoking sections of some restaurants.

Under a plan finalized Thursday, smoking would not be allowed in bars and restaurants or within 10 feet of bar entryways. Under the new proposal, smoking would still be permitted on areas of patios and porches of bars and on College Main when the road is blocked off to vehicle traffic.

A group of residents originally asked the council to ban smoking in all businesses and public outdoor areas.

Mayor Ben White said the compromise was a good solution and a "big step forward." It was necessary to expand the smoking ordinance, he said, because elected officials are charged with the health, safety and welfare of residents.

The ordinance also would prohibit smoking in workplaces, within 20 feet of entryways for public places other than bars, and at theatrical performances.

The ordinance will come back to the council for a public hearing and a vote at its Jan. 22 meeting.

Also at Thursday's meeting, the City Council agreed to allow staff members to move forward with a beautification program for landscaping in the area around Texas 6 and University Drive.

The major tree-planting project is designed to create a "gateway presence" into the city, said Marco Cisneros, parks and recreation director. Once the initial phase of the project has been completed, the council will consider expanding the program to other intersections along the highway.

The city will seeks bids for a construction contract with hopes of beginning the work in the fall.

Comment Title: Fat People- You're Next!
Next up after smoking- CS will outlaw fatty foods. Since they are bad for you, no longer may you eat fried foods in public. The grease and smell may OFFEND someone! Our leaders have NO COMMON SENSE or bal*s. They are puppets for a chosen few and carry out their desires as ordered. NONE of this is necessary with a little common RESPECT for others!

Comment Title: Free Market Does Not Work?
I guess the free market does not work. If these business owners do not want smoking in their establishments, let them take care of that on their own. If they do not have the guts to make their own decisions on that matter, then let them suffer whatever consequences they might suffer. Please stop relying on the government to enforce decisions you do not have the courage to make for your own businesses. I smoke cigarettes but do not drink alcohol or frequent bars. So, I could just not have an opinion as it does not effect me. But, it is stupid. It should be the business owner's decision, not the governments. I do go to restaurants with friends. 99% of my friends do not smoke, and we sit in nonsmoking sections if that is optional. I do not smoke in nonsmokers' homes. I do not smoke in my home if it is offensive to nonsmoking guests. Courtesy cannot be governed. All of this nonsense is either about common courtesy, or restaurants and businesses not wanting to spend money on expensive ventilation systems MANDATED by the City Council in the past if smoking sections are available. Now the City Council wants to do more for businesses to allow them to avoid the responsibility of making their own decisions. Thanks a lot. Just what we need. Less responsibility and ownership of decisions in a society in which responsibility and ownership of decisions appear to be great problems at large. Please help me City Council, I do not have the guts to make a decision. Pass an ordinance so I do not have to decide whether or not to spend dollars required by the last ordinance you passed requiring me to make a decision about whether or not to spend dollars to create a "safe" smoking area. Those businesses that did comply and create areas like that and did spend those dollars are just out of luck. Typical government nonsense. If anything about any business offends me, I just do business elsewhere. Pretty simple. I do not need the government to help me. Thanks, but no thanks.

Well Aggie Student, you are a little late with your reasons and you presented them to the wrong audience. A council meeting would have been great.

Comment Title: Ridiculous!
As a student myself, I really think that banning smoking from bars is a little outrageous. Restaraunts - fine. But bars? No! The differnce between College Station and Austin being able to ban smoking is the age limit. Not only do you have to be 21 to get into most bars in Austin but most of the bars do not charge a cover whereas in CS they do. I've been to Harry's before when I was underage and they were going to charge me again if I stepped outside because they didn't want minors going out to their cars to drink and then come back in. Well, if they now have to go outside to smoke since you only have to be 18 to smoke, who's to say they won't be going to their vehicles to drink and smoke before they are allowed back in? The hassle of watching people go in and out is just unnecessary. And furthermore, if smoking REALLY bothered people who didn't smoke or didn't like the smell, they would NOT be going out to bars because when you are in a bar setting there is way more smoking going on because there are people who only smoke when they are drinking. I can promise you that banning smoking is going to hurt some businesses around here. More people and students will be throwing parties instead of going out just so they can have their rights to smoke freely and you can bet that there will be more under-age drinking because of that. There's too many negative factors involved in banning smoking from bars. It's just not worth it to piss a bunch of people off which is what's going to happen.

Soon we will be told where we can and cannot eat. I understand that some group of people want to go enjoy themselves when they go out and not worry about smoke. But, what about those that do smoke? You are forcing your ideas on others. Thought this was a Democratic Society? By the way, I am a non-smoker.

Comment Title: This is the wrong idea
This whole idea is wrong I can understand restaurants and workplaces but these are BARS people smoke in BARS, northgate is going to see a big drop in sales when this goes into effect because of people like me who will no longer frequent those places. People who don't smoke need to grow up and get something better to do with their time they knowingly and willingly go to bars where they know there will be people smoking and then complain about having to be exposed to it well no one forced you to come to the bar in the first place you made your choice. Its the same with cig taxes they want to raise them up and up to make people quit but us smokers are the ones paying for all the poor peoples health care with out cig taxes when we quit what are you going to tax to death next beer, fast food, candy where does it all end.
