Scattered showers fell across the Brazos Valley on Tuesday, offering a brief reprieve from triple-digit temperatures. But many who needed rain the most got none.

"It cooled everything off, but as far as moisture, we're still having to irrigate like before," said David Estrada, a farmer who grows soybeans and corn on 4,000 acres between Mumford and Hearne.

"The last rain we got was six-tenths of an inch at the end of May," he said. "But we haven't gotten anything in June."

Regardless of how little rain fell, some saw it as an answer to their prayers.

On Sunday, about 150 members of seven churches gathered at Veterans Park in Rockdale to pray for rain.

"God is good, and he provides when we need it," said Milam County Cowboy Church lay pastor Kevin Mahr, who helped organize the community prayer. "God provides."

Officials with the National Weather Service in Houston said Wednesday might offer the last chance for rain in the foreseeable future.

"Tomorrow, there's a high of 99 and a 10 percent chance of rain," said meteorologist Kent Prochazka. "You might hit 20 percent, but you really don't want to get anyone's hopes up. Unfortunately, that means after our rain chances tomorrow, we're going to start drying back up again."

Temperatures will rise for the rest of the week, he said. For the year, Bryan-College Station is 6.61 inches below its average rainfall of 20.58 inches.

In the far western portion of Brazos County, radar estimates indicate that an inch to 1 1/2 inches of rain fell, compared with trace amounts of rain at Easterwood Airport, Prochazka said.

About 3 inches of rain fell near Bremond, Prochazka said, and parts of Burleson County got more than 2 inches.

Area officials said there was no flooding as a result of the rain.

No power outages were reported in College Station as a result of the thunderstorms, but in Bryan about 150 customers were temporarily without power.

Blinn College also was affected by the outages. Most buildings regained power quickly, but the bookstore building was without power for nearly two hours.
