Navasota River flooded, expected to rise Thursday

Road closures caused by flooding

Several roads in the area were closed Thursday, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
Madison County:
OSR, from the Navasota River to F.M. 1452 is closed due to water over the roadway.
OSR, between Texas 39 and F.M. 1452 due to flood damage.
Leon County:
F.M. 1848, from U.S. 79 to F.M. 489
Freestone County:
Texas 75 is closed from F.M. 833 to Spur 114 due to flood damage over the Tehugcana Creek.
Washington County
F.M. 1155 is now closed between Texas 105 and F.M. 1370 in Old Washington at Jordan Creek. There is cross structure damage caused by flooding and the roadway will be closed for a while. Drivers should use F.M. 912 as a detour.

The Navasota River near Normangee was flooding Thursday, and the National Weather Service predicts that it will continue to rise tonight.

The flood stage is 15 feet, and at 8:46 a.m. the river had reached 20.55 feet, said meteorologist Kent Prochzka. The weather service expected the river to rise to reach crest at 23 to 24 feet Thursday night and early Friday morning.

The river is expected to slowly recede during the day Friday and Saturday, and it could recede by 5 feet by Sunday morning, Prochzka said. The river is expected to be flooded until the middle of next week.

OSR was flooded Thursday where the road crosses the Navasota River, he said. The river is at the Madison-Brazos county line.

Officials with the Madison and Brazos counties sheriff's offices said flooding hadn't caused any problems as of mid-day Thursday except the closing of OSR from F.M. 1452 to the river at the county line.

The weather service predicts light rains Thursday, but there is a chance of stronger thunderstorms later Thursday, which could increase flooding.

The weather service urged people to stay away from the river until the levels recede, and stated drivers should avoid water-covered roadways and find an alternate route.

The forecast for the Bryan-College Station area Thursday is for a chance of thunderstorms with a high of 85 degrees and a low of 70.
