A Brenham animal rescue shelter is asking for donations and foster care providers for 57 horses discovered to be neglected at a Hopkins County ranch.
The horses were confiscated May 9 by True Blue Animal Rescue and the Bluebonnet Equine Human Society, along with local authorities.
The animals were found in unsanitary conditions and one dead horse was on the property, according to officials with the rescue shelter. The surviving animals have begun refeeding programs and are being checked by veterinarians, rescuers said.
Pictures on the shelter’s Web site showed at least one horse so malnourished that the shape of all its ribs could be clearly seen through its skin.
A hearing will be held May 19 before a Sulphur Springs justice of the peace to determine whether the horses may be permanently confiscated from the owner.
