Police: Gunman jailed on stalking charge in '07

A 25-year-old College Station man accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend and her brother Friday was arrested for stalking a different woman 19 months ago, authorities confirmed Monday.

David Hartley, chief of police at the Hempstead Police Department, said his department arrested John Darrell Thuesen in August 2007 and charged him with stalking and criminal trespassing.

Thuesen also was arrested in July 2007 for public intoxication, Hartley said.

The chief declined to release any information about either arrest. Reached by phone Monday afternoon, he said he had been out of the office Monday morning and did not have the opportunity to contact College Station detectives to inform them of the incident.

Stalking is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison and a $2,000 fine, but public records did not show a conviction on his record. Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis couldn't be reached for comment Monday.

Public records did indicate that Thuesen was convicted of drunken driving in December 2002. He pleaded guilty to that offense, records show.

Thuesen currently is listed as a student at Blinn College studying mathematics.

He first attended in fall 2002, presumably right out of high school, said Blinn spokeswoman Gena Parsons, who said he returned in fall 2005, but took a semester off in spring 2008.

Parsons said Thueson's records indicated he was in the military and people who know him have suggested he was a Marine. A Marine spokesman said he was looking into his military history Monday, but was unable to confirm his service.

Authorities said they were called to a house on Walcourt Loop on Friday afternoon after Thuesen called 911 and reported that a female had two gunshot wounds. They arrived to find Thuesen in the garage. Rachel Joiner, 21, was found in the garage with gunshot wounds to her chest and hand. Travis Joiner, 23, was found shot in the chest and buttock.

Both siblings were pronounced dead at the College Station Medical Center.

Funeral services are scheduled for the siblings at 2 p.m. Tuesday in their hometown of Eldorado. A church volunteer said many people in the small West Texas town of less than 2,000 have offered condolences and help to the Joiner family. They are expecting more than 300 people for Tuesday's funeral, she said.

Comment Title:
if you don't want to hear what people have to say about him, don't read the commentary. this is not the time to glorify him or anything he may have done prior to this incident. i agree that his previous offenses don't really matter in regards to the current one, but let's not lose sight of the issue. he murdered two very innocent people and rocked their entire circle of family and friends. those people will NEVER get the chance to talk to their families again. his family may be upset that they "lost their baby", but at least he's still alive. do you think the grieving family wants to read, or even CARES, that you think he was an "honorable" man? probably not.

Comment Title: I agree with "A Friendly Face"
Well said "a friendly face"! I honestly could have not said it better. People making such harsh comments on The Eagle as well as KBTX to every article written about this case, NEED TO STOP! It's not right and it's not fair to both families!

Comment Title: Unfair
Okay, I have read all of the articles in this paper, the TV stations, and our hometown paper. I can't believe the comments that people are making about John. John was a very dear friend of mine, and quite frankly I am appalled at all the hateful things people are saying. Do not get me wrong, I am not defending what he did, it was wrong, and my heart goes out to the family of the victims. I just can't stand everyone calling him a predator and saying that he was such a horrible person. Yes, John made mistakes...we all have!! John was arrested for stalking, but if anyone bothered to know the story, they would know that John was not stalking her!! John was arrested for a driving under the influence...when he was a teen!! I was at the same party and made the choice not to drink...he made a poor choice, but he shouldn't be classified as predator or multiple offender for this. No one realizes how badly they are hurting his family and friends! Yes, Iraq changed John...I'm not saying it's the only thing to blame, but the John I know was the man who called police and turned himself in. He was honorable, and had a great heart! John was one of the sweetest men I knew, and I've known him since we were kids. Please don't judge him by hearsay, yes he did something terrible, but he is hurting as well. John's family doesn't deserve to read all of these negative comments, they are suffering the loss of their baby too!!
