Police: Man says he stole to feed family

A 23-year-old Bryan man tried to steal food from a grocery store to feed his family, authorities said.

He was charged with theft of property worth more than $50 and less than $500, a Class B misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $2,000 and 180 days behind bars.

Bryan police said around 8 p.m. Friday, employees of the H-E-B Grocery Store off Villa Maria saw the man walking past the checkout with a basket full of food.

The man had placed some of the food items into plastic bags he had brought inside, and when employees asked he could not tell which register he used for checkout, according to police reports.

The food in his basket totaled more than $200 in value, police said.

After repeated questioning by police, officers said the man admitted to stealing and said he needed food for his family.

Police said he also had an outstanding warrant for theft out of Burnet County.

He was released from the Brazos County Jail on $3,500 bail Saturday.

Comment Title: Hungry
I've been hungry too. I gathered up change and bought a loaf of bread at the day old store, a few onions and a hunk of cheese and made that last for a week. No I didn't have cash for beer, cigarettes etc, and I didn't run my heat or have cable and a cell phone and didn't have a note to pay to the wheel rental place either. I had to wait for my paycheck from Manpower. Man up!

Comment Title: scrooges?
I don't think I've been irate as am right now after reading that post. Okay, so you've been hungry. So have I. Difference is, while you come online squealing like a pig how you crawled on your belly to steal from the weak and helpless, I stood on my two feet (like a man) and joined the Navy. When I was 23, instead of making excuses (like you do) and saying how bad my life was, I realized that my life was going nowhere and I took WHATEVER action I thought necessary to RISE ABOVE it. You're so full of yourself that you make ME want to puke, because after 7 years in the military, I learned that even the poorest of the poor in America are better off than average folks in half the world. Next time you want to spout off about how bad things are here, I'll be the one telling YOU that YOU know NOTHING about what is to be a man, and not some whining little earthworm.

The comment about Luther street is incorrect. I live in Bryan and have seen these apartments. Some of the rent on these apartments are pushing $3,000.00 per month. They are exclusively for the wealthy. My rent in Bryan is $400.00 a month. I cannot afford that type of luxury living. Instead I am stuck on Finfeather in Bryan until next May when my lease expires. All you have to do is drive down Finfeather then look at the apartments on Luther and tell me how scared you are. People have been murdered, robbed and major drug raids in the past 6 months alone on Finfeather. I plan on taking a student loan out next year so I can move. I have had my car burglarized, front door smashed in with TV's my school computer all taken. I have had it with Bryan and the good life.

Seeing wealthy students in new gated apartments that cost more in rent then the Avg citizens in Bryan makes in 6 months is very dangerous. Please put down the rock pipe, guns and knives in Bryan.

Comment Title: YOU scrooges try going hungry and see how YOU like it!
I hope none of you out there EVER go hungry.I don't know if he was/wasn't stealing to eat or for the money. I DO know what it's like to steal food to survive. Many years have past, but I will NEVER forget it as long as I live. When you are desperate, you don't always have a rolodex of food pantry sources at your fingertips. I also know, from experience, that the pantries don't always have enough to go around or you're supposed to sign up 3 weeks ago and now is too late. Easy for all of you sitting at home all nice and warm, so full you may puke- to make judgments on something you know NOTHING about... As far as the comments that NO drug dealers will accept food for drugs- HOW THE *&@@# do YOU know? TRIED IT???

Comment Title: Undecided
I love the comment from Maybe he sold it to. I totally agree with you. Before it is all said and sone College Station will be just as bad because they are in denial. What I do not understand is how is it that a few people get to become the whole Bryan. I see nice neighborhoods in Bryan. I would actually move there but I do not want my kids going to Bryan schools. I go to Bryan and I do not fear for my life. However I also agree with the people who said that if he had bond money then he had money for food. Either way this is not the example you want to show your kids.

Comment Title: Drug dealers taking food for payment
There may not be any drug dealers taking food for payment, but there is no shortage of people buying up steaks on Lone Star cards then peddling the meat for 1/2 price (Cash only please)

Thing are so bad in Bryan today. We only have a few grocery store still in Business. I hope they do not steal this store out of Business also. We now have no grocery stores west of Texas ave. over 60% of the city residents have to go into CS and the far east side of Bryan for food.

the College Station thug who assaulted his estranged wife on Royder Road, or maybe he sold it to the College Station resident who threatened his fellow residents at the Whataburger on Dominik. Read about both these College Station thugs in The Eagle.

He steals 200+ in groceries. And has money to pay a bondsman the minimum of 350. Should have use his bond money to pay for food.

Some similarities between this guy from Bryan and: (1) Odis Thornton of College Station arrested by CSPD for robbery Dec. 26th, and (2) Jarrett Woodward of College Station arrested for burglary on Dec. 26th. See the Eagle article for more info on Woodward.

If money is available for bail, it should be available for food. There are also food stamps and HUD housing if necessary. And just how many folks should H-E-B let steal food? Should this leniency apply to all stores that market necessities? I'm not completely without sympathy, but I'd like to know what types of food he stole.

Comment Title: it's just food
there are no drug dealers that accept food in lieu of money. there are many food banks in the college station bryan area, but many only offer food once a month. if you have a family that food cannot last a whole month. i'm guessing a family member put up the money for him to be bailed out. the guy was stealing food for godsakes. the economy is in a huge slump and the guy stole some food. they should have just given him the food and let him walk. i feel bad for the guy

We have food banks all over Bryan and more churches then I can count giving food away. The churches do have some rules like no selling the food for drugs and alcohol. This is a common problem in Bryan. FOOD FOR DRUGS. The food bank are always filled at Christmas time from donations drives. If you have to have food now you can also go to Bryan Downtown homeless center 24/7

Comment Title: Food For Thought!
I may be giving away who I am but.. I worked for the Brazos food Bank a few years ago. I worked in helping the hungry. So when someone steals and say it was for family need, it makes me angry. First don't steal. Second.Don'i lie on your family.. Third. You wasted money on a bond. You had money. There are families that are in need of help and they choose not to steal. This guy just didn't want to pay. So.. Gas to go to the store $5.00. Time spent casing the store $5.00. Property stolen $200.00. Cost for the trip to jail. Priceless.

What is the cost of a $3,500 bail from a bail bondsman? I thought it was about 10% of the bail, or $350. Sorry if this guy was trying to feed his family because he/they were broke, but if he can come up with bail money, well,,,,,,
