A police report filed earlier this month described an armed bank robber this way: The suspect is a male wearing a long, black dress.
Wait. What?
Brandon Okeith Hutchins, a 27-year-old Bryan resident with a goatee, was arrested Sunday on a charge that he robbed a bank in his hometown. Well-publicized surveillance video captured images filmed Aug. 3 of a 5-foot-10 person wearing a dress, wig and sunglasses, and carrying an open umbrella before walking into the bank.
It wasn't clear Monday what evidence linked Hutchins to the mid-afternoon robbery at The Bank and Trust, 3400 Texas 21 E.
Authorities took the case to a grand jury, which indicted Hutchins Aug. 19 and allowed for officers to issue a warrant for his arrest. The warrant was sealed, meaning details about how law enforcement tied him to the crime -- or even that he was under indictment -- couldn't be made public.
Officials wouldn't comment on the pending case.
He was charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, punishable by five years to 99 years in prison.
When asked if the Bryan police are starting to see a trend with criminals dressing in costumes or other disguises, spokesperson Officer Jon Agnew replied: "Not like that. That was definitely unique."
Police said the man in a dress entered the bank, displayed a firearm to a bank employee and demanded money. He then fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
He was last arrested in 2004 on a misdemeanor evading arrest charge, his second.
Hutchins remained in the Brazos County Jail without bail late Monday.
Bryan police officers said he was taken into custody by the Hearne Police Department at about 3 a.m. Sunday, but it wasn't immediately known how officials knew to track him there.
