Sonic reopens after failing health check

— Eagle staff report

A Bryan fast-food restaurant was shut down this week after failing a health inspection.

Sonic Drive-In on Briarcrest reopened Wednesday following a mandatory 24-hour closure and $500 fine.

Inspectors with the Brazos County Health Department gave the restaurant a score of 60, 10 points below a passing score.

The restaurant was cited for 11 violations. Inspectors said they found flies and fruit flies in the restaurant, slime in the ice machine, improper hand-washing and food being stored at the wrong temperature.

A cooler containing hamburger meat was not kept at the proper temperature, gloves were not being used by food handlers, and there was a "lack of good hygienic practices," according to the inspector's report.

A manager at Sonic declined to comment on the inspection, citing company policy.

Health Department officials said this is the first time this year the Briarcrest Sonic has failed inspection.

A second failing grade would result in a three-day closure, and after a third, its certification would be revoked.

You say fire the manager but at the jail no one has said to fire the sheriff. Compliance is compliance. Sheriff makes a lot more than a Sonic manager.

Fire the manager apparently he doesn't know how to run a clean establishment where people should wear gloves while preparing food. It's time to start eating at home!

Comment Title: Good grief?
Sounds like the manager needs to be fired! No excuse for not running a clean establishment with food handlers not wearing gloves! It's time we just all eat at home! Nasty!

The train goes only as fast as the engine that pulls it. Manager should be held accountable.

It's not the best place... but when you've been working outside, and you run over to Lowe's for a gizmo, and you're hot and thirsty and in a hurry - there's a Sonic. The location has great potential, but I quit going there because it's such a waste of time.

I am surprized the Sonic Corp. does not come down on this franchize. They should. Who is owner? We should hear who it is, they may own other stores.

Comment Title: Poor management
I quit going to this Sonic a year ago. It's the slowest place in town. Now I know that it doesn't take them two minutes to answer the button because they're busy cleaning!

Comment Title: you know what
i can tell there was something wrong at that sonic cause i go to that sonic in bryan ..i think these young girls don't take care of the business like the older women..or guys..its ok to hire younger adults but they need to know how to keep things clean and how to keep everything running smooth..so i feel they need to be trained better..before they are hired on for long term work...kind a like a probation for say 2 weeks then they work out keep them on full time..instead of hireing these kids don't know anything about maintaining a food business..
