State park to honor Texas' 173rd b'day

Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park will celebrate Texas' 173rd birthday this weekend at the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. The site is on Texas 105 on F.M. 1155 between Navasota and Brenham at the original town site of Washington.

Events begin Saturday at 11 a.m. with a presentation on Texas heroes in the museum theater. More historical presentations will take place Saturday and Sunday in the theater. Each presentation highlights important people in Texas history.

A presentation at 12:30 p.m. Sunday will tell about the life of Sam Houston through music.

The main presentation will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the amphitheater. The Texas Independence Day program will feature speaker Stephen Hardin, followed by a Texas Army black-powder gun salute and a Texas-sized birthday cake.

Re-enactors in period costumes will make crafts throughout the weekend.

All events are free. For more information, call 936-878-2214 or visit www.birthplaceoftexas.com.
