Lauth Development has confirmed a new slate of tenants for the Bryan Towne Center.
Shipley's Do-Nuts, Rue 21, Rack Room Shoes, Maurice's and Nailtopia have signed leases for the center, Lauth spokesman Marc Lotter said. Lauth is the Indianapolis-based developer of the 400,000-square-foot center at Briarcrest Drive and Texas 6.
The retailers' opening dates will vary, depending on construction schedules, Lotter said, but most are expected to open in late summer or early fall.
Target, the center's anchor, will hold its grand opening July 27, company spokeswoman Katie Benscoter said. The store, though it's not a SuperTarget, will feature a small line of grocery products.
As Target continues to emerge, local interest in the center's other tenants has increased. Rumors have been circulating that SaltGrass Steak House and several others would locate in the Bryan Towne Center.
Lotter said that he did not have information on SaltGrass but that the center's brokers have been in discussions with Baskin Robbins, International House of Pancakes, Citi Financial and Anytime Fitness, a 24-hour fitness center franchise with locations in the Houston and Dallas areas.
Kevin Russell, development services director for the city of Bryan, said Rue 21, Maurice's and Rack Room Shoes received permits in mid-May. He said his department had not received site plans, permit requests or other documents from any of the other tenants.
Russell and Bryan Assistant City Manager Joey Dunn also said they couldn't confirm whether SaltGrass was among the tenants for the center.
"We recently traveled to the International Convention of Shopping Centers convention and met with some retailers," Dunn said. "People were very excited about what Target really brings to this center."
Lotter said Lauth anticipated that leasing could pick up once Target is open.
"The effect of the economy on the retail sector is widely known," Lotter said. "It's affecting leasing at retail developments across the nation. One of the things we highlight is the success of our developments and our history."

Comment Title: answer to comment from "Concerned (confused) Citizen"
If Target is the ugliest thing you ever seen, you obviously don't get out much. Look around! That's one of the nicest developments in the whole city, along with the HEB Center on Briarcrest. But your real problem is that it was developed at all. Of course it is across the street from Super WalMart, that is where anyone with a brain would put a big store like that...near other big stores and right on the bypass. Do you think Texas Ave needs more congestion? And if you had asked anyone who knows what is going on, you'd find out that there is going to be a whole trail system built back there that will extend all the way to College Station...and probably a large park for the residents to enjoy too. People in Bryan are sick of giving all their sales tax dollars to College Station and should be able to spend the money in their own city so the city can make improvements with the money. Where did you get the idea that there are no taxes on Target or on the builder? They will both be paying huge amounts of sales tax and real estate taxes from the day Target opens. I'm not sure, but I think that land doesn't pay hardly anything in real estate taxes now because I think there is a cow that lives there (now you're going to want to have a "save-the-cow" rally). The people of Bryan don't want to be the redheaded step-child of College Station anymore, they want to control their own future with their own tax revenue! Sounds like you are a frustrated "Greeny"...please move to College Station when you graduate so you can ruin their future.

Comment Title:
This will be a great asset for the City and for the citizens of Bryan. We need stores and shopping in this town, i'm tired of driving to College Station for everything, it about time we had things here. There are plenty of nature trails in the county, get out and drive, see the country, let the city grow, there is no problem with change, it's going to come weather we like it or not, i'm for it!

Comment Title: People blinded by Greed. MMMMM MONEY!
This Target is the ugliest thing I've ever seen. Lauth DUG UP THE NATURE TRAIL at the Brazos Center just for the dirt underneath it. The fact that City of Bryan let such greedy people come in a change a beautiful piece of forest into the cement monstrosity that's there now makes me sick. The City practically begged them to locate Target there, with the promise of hardly touching any revenue with taxes. The Super Wal-Mart is 2 blocks away, and sells almost identical merchandise. More development is promised for that nice stretch of highway in the future. Lauth signs line the access road. Maybe Texans will realize that having some mega-conglomo tearing up the environment isn't ultimately in the people's best interest. Hopefully before it's too late.
