A 53-year-old man died Friday night when his vehicle struck a bridge support on Texas 6, authorities said.
Dennis Shelly of Lubbock was driving south on Texas 6 around 5:45 p.m. when his sport utility vehicle left the road and slammed into the bridge support under University Drive.
Police said there were reports that the vehicle was on fire, but Shelly was not burned. He was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by firefighters. He was taken to College Station Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Traffic had to be re-routed following the accident, and the southbound lanes of Texas 6 remained closed late Friday as investigators continued to examine the scene.
Police said it was unclear what caused the man to drive off the road and whether the collision killed him.
