Three killed in area wrecks

Two men were killed early Monday morning in a one-vehicle accident in Madison County, officials said. Another 19-year-old man from Lyons died Sunday in another single-vehicle wreck in Burleson County.

Department of Public Safety officials said James Elmer Jordan, 50, and Jonaire Lakey Johnson, 20, died at the scene of an accident around 1 a.m. Monday on F.M. 247 about six miles south of Midway.

Funeral services for Dillon Gene Powell, who was a student at Texas State Technical College in Waco, are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Somerville. A visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday with the family present at 5 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville.

DPS officials said Powell was eastbound on C.R. 423 around 3:45 a.m. Sunday when his 2004 Chevrolet pickup went off the north side of the road.

Powell steered right sharply before the truck went into a slide, skidded into the southside ditch and hit a tree on the driver's side 1.3 miles east of Somerville, investigators reported.

He died at the scene around 4:30 a.m. Family members asked Monday that donations be made to a scholarship fund set up in Powell's memory at Citizen's State Bank.

DPS officials said Johnson and Jordan were headed northbound on F.M. 247 in Burleson County when their vehicle slammed into a tree because of wet roads.

Officials said Jordan was driving a 1987 Cadillac when the tires on the right side of the vehicle left the pavement. Johnson attempted to correct the vehicle back onto the roadway but ended up skidding across the road, hitting a tree in a ditch on the west side.

Johnson, who is from New Waverly, and Jordan, who is from Midway, were not wearing seatbelts, according to DPS reports.

A graveside funeral service for Johnson is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Midway Southside Cemetery near Madisonville.

Funeral services for Jordan were pending Monday with a Houston funeral home, officials said.
