Three people died in two wrecks less than an hour apart Tuesday morning on a wet, foggy Texas 6, authorities said.
Marie Ramsey, 78, was driving north on Earl Rudder Freeway near Harvey Mitchell Parkway when she reacted to something -- possibly an abandoned vehicle on the shoulder. She overcorrected and the vehicle slid and rolled several times, a spokeswoman for the city of Bryan said.
The Hearne woman died at the scene.
Her husband, Archie Ramsey, 84, was rushed to St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan, where he died, officials said.
Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, officials said.
Weather conditions included mist and fog, Bryan police said. The department closed northbound lanes of the road Tuesday afternoon to reconstruct the accident.
Less than an hour later, a 20-year-old La Joya man heading south on the Texas 6 feeder road north of University Drive crashed into a tree after veering off the wet road and rolling down an embankment, according to College Station police.
Rumaldo Esquivel Jr. was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Regional Health Center. He was the only person in the vehicle.
Police closed the southbound exit ramp from Texas 6 to University Drive until about 5 p.m. so they could reconstruct the crash.
The two wrecks occurred when area temperatures were just above freezing. The National Weather Service issued a freezing-rain advisory Monday night that lasted through early Tuesday morning.
Temperatures picked up through the day and were in the mid-50s Tuesday evening.
The Department of Public Safety investigated about eight weather-related crashes Monday but none Tuesday as of about 5 p.m., Sgt. Charles Booker said.
