One of Bryan's oldest neighborhoods has been granted a charter for the Escondido Neighborhood Association.
The association formed in January under the leadership of resident Alexander Rubio. The association meets monthly, and plans for neighborhood improvements are under way. Amy Reed, program director of Keep Brazos Beautiful, will speak at the group's next meeting March 30 at 3 p.m.
The Escondido district is within walking distance of the Blinn College campus, downtown Bryan, Sue Haswell Park and Bryan city offices and has quick and easy access to Texas 6.
The association has also established a Web site at http://www.enabryan.org.
College Station's water services department recently won two statewide awards for "top-notch, effective communications in the water industry."
Receiving top honors from the Texas section of the American Water Works Association were the city's drinking water quality report and a public service announcement. Water services coordinator Jennifer Nations and broadcast media specialist Mark Beal created both items.
The city employees will accept the awards at a conference in San Antonio on March 27.
Veterinarian Dickson Varner was selected recently as the presenter of the 2007 Frank J. Milne State-of-the-Art Lecture at the 53rd Annual Convention of the American Association of Equine Practitioners in Orlando, Fla.
The lecture showcases and honors a member of the AAEP who has shown dedication to a specific area of equine study. Varner was chosen as the expert regarding the stallion.
Named for past president and distinguished member Frank J. Milne, the lecture series focuses on equine subjects deemed "state-of-the-art" by members of the equine veterinary profession. Nominees are chosen by a group within the association's education program committee and approved by its executive board.
Veterinarian G. Kent Carter was recently inducted into the International Equine Veterinarians Hall of Fame as the 2008 college and industry veterinarian.
The honor recognizes his accomplishments, achievements and contributions in the advancement of equine foot care.
"I am very honored and humbled by receiving this award," said Carter, professor and chief of medicine of large animal clinical sciences at Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine.
He also has been inducted into the International Horseshoeing Hall Of Fame.
Carter has launched an innovative instructional rotation at Texas A&M dedicated to equine lameness, which includes foot care and its relationship to many lameness problems.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert White, son of Nina Barber of Bryan and Kenneth White of Pointblank, recently reported for duty at Naval Air Station, Kingsville.
White joined the Navy in 1996.
Emmitt Dean Attaway of College Station and Kathren Annette May and Simeon Scallon, both of Bryan, have been named to the dean's list at Stephen F. Austin State University for the fall semester.
Ryan Yezak of Snook and Kyle Bronowski of Bryan were recently named to the fall dean's list at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall.
Jazen Merrill and Katie Johnston, both of College Station, were recently named to the dean's list at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
Martin Arguello of College Station and Clayton Starnes of Rockdale graduated from Baylor University Law School in Waco last month.
