Nearly 300 people turned out Wednesday for a ribbon cutting that marked the opening of Twin City Mission's emergency shelter, officials said.
The new shelter will replace The Bridge's current location on Main Street in downtown Bryan -- a site it has used for more than 40 years. Residents will move into the new facility Monday.
County and city officials met with community leaders Wednesday to celebrate and tour the facility on 16 acres off Randolph Street.
The shelter is several times the size of the downtown Bryan facility and includes a larger community cafe. The cafe in downtown Bryan served more than 84,700 meals last year to residents and community members, officials said.
The new facility has room for 72 men and 26 women in the emergency shelter and long-term space for 12 men and eight women. The new facility also has seven family rooms, each with two double beds and space for cribs, baby beds and roll-away beds.
Sufficient family housing was lacking in the older structure, which had four family beds attached to the women's dorm.
The Main Street building had 48 beds for men and 12 beds for women.
