Several school districts through the Brazos Valley will remain closed this week as power will be out indefinitely for many area counties.
Nearly all of Grimes and Madison counties remained dark Monday, as did large portions of Burleson and Robertson counties.
In Grimes, the Navasota school board was scheduled to hold an emergency meeting at 3:30 p.m. Monday to discuss the status of its campuses.
Along with Navasota, Iola, Anderson, Richards, Madisonville, Normangee and North Zulch classrooms, as well as those in Bremond, Franklin and Mumford, all were closed Monday. Campuses in Navasota, Franklin and Madisonville were expected to remain closed Tuesday, but officials were urging parents to call the main administration number in their district to follow up. Iola-Shrio officials said they will be closed through the week and reopen Sept. 22.
In Burleson County, Somerville schools were closed for the week, though teachers and staff were instructed to report at 9 a.m. Friday for a work day. Caldwell schools also remained closed until further notice because of the power outage.
In Milam County, only the 250-person community of Gause remained without power. But emergency management officials said Monday that the district planned to hold half-day classes this week, beginning Tuesday. The move, prompted because of the "cold front," allows for teaching in core curriculum areas.
District administrators told emergency management officials that the campus had lots of large windows, which can be opened, would provide light.
School will be released at 12:30 p.m. Buses will run on a normal schedule. Various activities are scheduled for students who don’t have transporation and must stay on campus and wait for the the bus.
Depending on the weather and extent of the power outage, classes eventually could be moved to nearby Milano if necessary.
