Wreck leaves 3 dead in Madison County

Three people were killed Friday in a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 45 in Madison County. Two others were injured.

Mary Aamodt, 75, and Elmer Aamodt, 80, of Grand Prairie, and Noel Kuester, 74, of Bellaire died at the scene six miles south of Madisonville, according to police reports.

Ana Oliva, 24, of Splendora, suffered a broken kneecap, and Helen Kuester, 69, had minor injuries, officials said.

Department of Public Safety reports state that the vehicle in which the Aamodt's were driving collided with Oliva's vehicle in the southbound lane and both cars went across the median into the northbound lane into oncoming traffic, striking the car driven by Helen Kuester, who was headed north.

Oliva and the Aamodts were not wearing seat belts, DPS officials said.

Some details in the initial report filed by DPS was incorrect.

Comment Title: Thank you for the correction
Thank you for the latest correction to the story. As you can imagine, the Kuester's family and friends were terribly upset by the misinformation. Although Helen Kuester's injuries are "minor" and she should physically be back to normal in a couple of months, the emotional pain of losing her husband is devastating. We recognize that the Aamodt's family also sustained a devastating loss and we extend our deepest sympathies to them.

Comment Title: Wreck Leaves 3 Dead in Madison County
Mr. Kuester was a passenger in the car going north on I-45 which was struck by both cars which had crossed the median. The Aamodts' vehicle was going south and struck the Oliva vehicle which was also going south which caused both vehicles to lose control and cross into the northbound lanes. Both vehicles struck the Kuester vehicle killing Mr. Kuester instantly.

Comment Title: STILL INCORRECT
The Kuesters were traveling NORTH, not south going from Houston to Dallas. The cars that were traveling south crossed the median and hit the Kuesters. Please issue another correction.

Comment Title: Correcting Inaccuracies in Story
As noted in the other comments, the story in inaccurate. The 4th paragraph should read, as follows: Police said Elmer Aamodt was driving south on I-45 six miles south of Madisonville when he changed lanes, striking the Oliva's vehicle. Both drivers lost control, and the vehicles traveled across the median into the northbound lanes, where they both struck the Kuester's vehicle, according to reports. This accident happened around noon on Friday, June 6th.

Comment Title: Friday or Sunday?
Did this happen Friday or was it Sunday late afternoon. There was a horrible wreck on Sunday that stopped traffic for well over an hour.

Comment Title: Irresponsible reporting.
This story is inaccurate and the subsequent retraction is also inaccurate. Another retraction needs to be published and should be linked to this story. Under horrible upsetting circumstances the Kuester family now has to contend with questions about two members of their family being reported as responsible for 3 deaths. This is unconscionable and irresponsible reporting. When it was reported that the facts were incorrect in the initial story, you would this that this newspaper would go to greater efforts to validating the facts before printing the so-called "retraction". If this is the kind of reporting that is common in this newspaper, it certainly calls in to question the reliability of any of their work. Please print another retraction and link it to this story so that in the future when this family is searched in google there is not a prominent link to an incorrect story rather than a link to the retraction. In this day an age, you should understand that this information is now spread on the internet and it should be your responsiblity to spread the correction as well.

Comment Title: median barrier
I know some of he folks involved in this accident and regardless of what happened how - had some median barrier (cables) been in place, the results of this accident may have been much less severe or significantly reduced. Let's all pray for healing for the families of everyone involved.

Comment Title: Check your information!
I personally know the Kuester family and that is not what happened! Noel was a passenger, his wife was driving and they were headed North to their granddaughters graduation. They were struck by the older couple who originally hit the younger couple...This is sad to see you reporting facts that aren't even the facts to people. What police did you talk to? Did you even talk to some one or did you just misprint information about Mr. Kuester who can't even defend himself because someone killed him...not the other way around. You should be ashamed!!

Comment Title: so sad
I was on the way to Dallas from Houston and this wreck happened right in front of me. Horrible to see and a miracle that anyone survived. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones. I hope for quick healing for those who were injured.
