Texas A&M University has partially relented on a controversial meal plan mandate that forces on-campus students to purchase plans from a private vendor.

Starting in the fall, only freshman that live on campus and members of the Corps of Cadets will be required to purchase meals from outsourced dining provider Chartwells. Plans to require on-campus sophomores, juniors and seniors to purchase the meal plans have been scratched.

Brought to you by Chartwells. Chartwells, where we almost had a captive consumer. Remember, that Chartwells C-H-A-R-T-W-E-L-L-S, a "local", "aggie" company.

As a sophomore on campus I disagree with the comments of robc. The flexibility of the meal plan improved dramatically at the end of fall semester and the food has gotten much better this year. The staff seems friendlier and there are actually managers who talk to you and are happy to listen to concerns and opinions. I have a friend who attended another Chartwells school and they toured students through their kitchens to show what a great job they did using real food and practicing safe cooking techniques. I am sure of you asked they would here at A and M.

I worked for Chartwells (Compass) for 5 years 2005-2009..I was in charge of residential dining at the University of Miami..my boss was the same loser you at A & M are about to get...you will see how chartwells will only spent less than $2.00 a meal while you are paying much more....you will see todays meatloaf will be tomorrows chili the next days ground beef tacos the following days spagettis meat sauce and if ground beef is left day 5, 6 or 7 etc. will be sloopy joes or pizza toppings etc...Chartwells will not throw out anything.....all other items become stir fry for the next week...Chartwells taught me all the tricks for a CPM (cost per meal )(of under $2.00 ) hey, bonuses depend on it....after the 3rd week of your meal plan you will begin to see the food nose dive in quality....by the last month of your meal plan you won't even want to eat in the dining room...chartwells numbers historically show that data...they bank on it....they got a lot more tricks up thier sleeve and I know them all...feel free to email me @ robcanavan@aol.com ..

I wonder how much the university is refunding Chartwells (Compass) because of this. At least the business plan of "charging for a meal plan and then making the food so bad that no one eats on campus thus making millions in leftovers", is no longer functional. It also avoids legal suits.
