The average funeral in 1960 cost $708. Today, a funeral costs more than 10 times that, excluding costs for cemetery plots, gravestones, flowers and obituaries, according to the National Funeral Director's Association.
The Bryan school district, which has not had a basic life insurance benefit increase for its employees in 17 years, when funerals cost just under $5,000, approved at its Monday board meeting an increase to the benefit based on inflation.
