Soon, someone will find themselves with a new roof over their head, free of charge.
The owners of America's Choice Roofing, Frances and Gary Spivey, are asking for the public's help in selecting a winner of a cost-free roof by going online and voting as part of the Freedom Roof Project.
The Iola couple developed the program in 2012 after encountering numerous families over the years who could use a new roof but couldn't afford it.
This is the fifth time the Spiveys have installed a free new roof for a family, but only the second time to do so through the Freedom Roof Project, Frances Spivey said.
In January, they donated roofing materials and services to a 62-year-old College Station woman.
This time around, 12 families and individuals were nominated, and the list was narrowed to the three that received the most votes from a panel of six judges from businesses and organizations in the community, Frances Spivey said, adding she was glad not to be part of the selection process.
"It would be such a hard thing to pick," she said. "We wish we could help them all."
The last day to vote is Dec. 15, and the family or individual selected for the new roof will be announced Dec. 18.
Spivey said a celebration for the winner will be Dec. 28, at which point roofers will start and finish installation.
Finalists include an 88-year-old Bryan woman, a mother and her grandson from Iola and a family in Bryan.
