R. Bowen Loftin says he decided to resign to spend more time with students

Posted: Tuesday, July 16, 2013 12:00 am

Texas A&M University President R. Bowen Loftin said he resigned to spend more time with students, and he made the announcement last week to give administrators ample time to find a replacement.

Loftin, 64, spoke to three reporters Monday morning in 10-minute, one-on-one phone interviews. It was Loftin's first time answering questions publicly since his Friday announcement, which did not explicitly state why the university's top administrator was resigning.

After his name disappeared from The Eagle pages, I searched for him on the internet, and found his vita on the job application sites. So my conclusion was that he was fired, because I assume, he would have only resigned from his Eagle job, while having a new job.

He's doing the exact same thing Frank Vandiver did in 1988.

I've heard mixed stories. What evidence do you have that Patel was "fired"?

I think the Mosher Institute faded away after Frank Vandiver died in 2005. In the early 2000's there appeared to only be two staff members. By 2007 they were both gone. Loftin's statements make it sound like he wants to replicate what Vandiver did in 1988.

Perry won't be available until January 2015. Is A&M going to just run with an interim president for a year until Perry is available, or can a sitting governor also be a university president? This all goes away also if Perry attempts another (to be doomed) run at the White House.

Well, when 25x25 becomes a reality he'll have a whole lot of students to spend time with.

FromAfar: Ray Bowen was OK up until the bonfire collapse of 1999 in which he flat out refused to take responsibility for it even though it fell another time on his watch in 1994. Do you remember that? He then hired an outside firm spending almost 2 million to see who truly was at fault, not really a sign of a strong leader IMHO. I met him in person and he was not a nice person. Ohh and by the way, his son Ray Bowen Jr. was a CFO at Enron who helped to orchestrate the collapse and denied employees any severance all the while giving himself a 700K bonus. He was banned from financial dealings for 5 years and fined 500K by the SEC. Hardly a standup family if you ask me. Ray Bowens inactions costs 12 lives and a memorial. Ray Bowen Jr. actions cost livelihoods.

In former times, the The Eagle would have filed an open record request to find out the real story behind that resignation. But since they fired Vimal Patel, it became the mouthpiece of A&M's administration and the BoR.

You guys should rename yourselves to "A&M PRAWDA"

In the 30 years I have been on the faculty, A&M has had one good president (Ray Bowen) and one very good president (Bob Gates). What severance package did these men receive when they resigned?

More time with students? Maybe Loftin plans to become Manziel's personal parole officer.

What a bunch of garbage. How can anyone have any respect for Loftin when he so blatantly lies about what is happening. What a disgrace. He's resigning to spend more time with students? As university president, he spent more time with students than any faculty member on campus! He's walking away from a $425,000 a year salary where he did little more than walk around campus and athletic events talking to students....so he can accept less money for spending time with students? Does he expect anyone to believe this nonsense? Send him back to Virginia. Someone once said Aggies aren't supposed to lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do.

Isn't there already an institute that studies bioterrorism? What is the Mosher Institute?

What a clown and good hair puppet. Tell the truth for once, you got out of the way so the bor can appoint the former gov. of Texas, gov good hair and no brain the newest pres of TAMU. Makes me sick at my stomach for 3 reasons, oops I forgot 2 of them, what an embarassment good hair has been for Texas and Texas A&M.
