It was unknown how many people were injured in a major accident on Texas 21 close to Madisonville that shut down the highway in both directions.
All that was left of the cab of an 18-wheeler, which apparently burst into flames, were pieces of twisted metal, while a nearby truck looked beyond repair. Firefighters continued to douse the engine of the 18-wheeler at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, but the worst of the fire was out.
A PHI medical helicopter retrieved one patient from the wreckage, though its destination was unclear. A law enforcement officer at the scene said the driver of the 18-wheeler was burned in the accident. Hydraulic rescue tools were used to extract the driver from the truck; the person's condition wasn't known.
Authorities are asking motorists to use an alternate route.
More details once as they become available.
