16-year-old dies in rollover near Navasota

A 16-year-old girl was killed and four others were injured, including the teen driver who authorities said overcorrected and flipped the vehicle near Navasota Wednesday night.

Jessica Mattern, a passenger, died at the scene, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Amanda Alfaro, 15, was driving south on F.M. 3090 in Grimes County just north of Navasota at almost 7 p.m. when her 2000 Chevrolet suburban left the roadway, she overcorrected and the vehicle overturned, a DPS official said. The DPS official did not know what prompted Alfaro to leave the roadway.

Alfaro was taken to College Station Medical Center in good condition, according to the DPS. Sierria Simmons, 4, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston in critical condition with head injuries, the DPS official said.

Mary Elizabeth Alfaro, 4, was taken to College Station Medical Center in good condition with lacerations, the DPS official said. Merricka Yabarra, 15, was in stable condition at College Station Medical Center with cuts, bruises and a leg injury.

All occupants of the vehicle were from Navasota and were wearing their seatbelts, the DPS official said. She did know know their relationship to each other or if the driver had a driver's license.

No citations had been issued by Thursday, she said.

Trooper William Kettler investigated the wreck, and could not immediately be reached for further details.

Comment Title: Bad information
Sorry for having bad information, but Sierra is still alive. They took her off life support, which was all we heard, but someone failed to tell us that she was breathing on her own again.

Comment Title: legal age driver?
If the driver of the vehicle is 15, she might have a driver's permit. Condolences to the survivors of the deceased girl. This sounds like a needless death, with an inexperienced, underage driver.
