Two women with prior theft convictions remained jailed Thursday after police said they caught them stealing about $600 of clothing from a College Station store.
Shaneque Nicole Taylor, 30, and Latasha Rene Monroe, 25, both of Bryan, were each arrested Wednesday for theft less than $1,500 with two or more previous convictions.
An officer stated in a police report that he responded to a call from Old Navy at 2050 Texas Ave. South just after 6 p.m. He said he was working closely with employees there in regard to some incidences of shoplifting and harassment and an employee reported that a person involved in a previous incident was at the store.
The officer watched Taylor and Monroe walk out the front door on a security camera as anti-theft alarms were activated, according to the police report. The women did not stop as two officers yelled at them to stop and got into a car, according to the report.
However, they stopped the car when the officers caught up with them, according to the report. Officers saw several sets of clothes in Monroe's purse and a bulge where Taylor had hidden clothes in her pants, police said.
Taylor had been convicted of theft in 2002 and in 2008, and Monroe was convicted of theft in 2005 and 2007, according to police records.
Because of their prior convictions, their theft charges are state jail felonies punishable by up to two years in jail and a fine up to $10,000.
Bail was set at $5,000 for each woman.

Comment Title: Good going PD / DA
I am glad to see that the PD and DA's office are working together to enhance theft charges to felonies as they have been able to do for many years. If they can and are able to do this for bad check writers, maybe that activity will slow down as well. Both shoplifting and bad checks do nothing but increase prices for honest citizens everywhere. You posters can use this city to bash Bryan or College Station any day that you choose to do so. Bottom line for me, I am happy that thieves are locked up. I am happy that charges are enhanced when they can be so they might stay behind bars just a bit longer. Way to go law enforcement.

Seems to be easier to pick a couple of stories about criminal acts by people from other locals and blame the entire increase on them. Sad state of affairs when a city cannot or will not admit its deficiencies and correct them. Point that finger College Station.

Hey, where's the guy who raves on about Hearne having their Wal-Mart shoplifted out of business. Why isn't he all over this? CS HS kidz might have their Old Navy, American Eagle, and Abercrombie & Fitch stolen out of business.

How dare these young woman go and shoplift in the town of College Station what did you think you were not going to get caught. Did you think that the whole College Station town was at home sleeping with 14 year old boys. Just Jaimie, next time you want to still do us all a favor and go and steal the liquor so that little boys will no longer be victimized by College Station.

Well hopefully they will be wearing new orange jumpsuits for a long time in Prison! I guess they don't know what WORK is ...where you get a paycheck to buy things; no they had rather sponge off society with welfare, HUD housing, theft and most likely having one kid after another so their welfare will increase! Ridiculous ....get a job and quit thinking society will support you and your brood of kids!
