A 17-year-old Bryan Collegiate High School student was arrested after a double-edged, nine-inch knife was found in his pocket, authorities said.
Nathan Aron Toler of Bryan was charged Thursday with unlawfully carrying a weapon in a weapons-free zone.
Toler was sent to the principal’s office after a student reported seeing what looked like a knife in Toler’s pocket, according to a police report.
The principal called police after seeing the tip of the knife sticking out of his pocket. Police said the knife was designed for throwing.
Toler told authorities that he had been whittling with the knife the night before and had forgotten to take it out of his pocket, police said.
Because the school campus is a weapons-free zone, the charge is a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.
Toler was released from the Brazos County Jail the day of his arrest on $5,000 bail.
