Police said they arrested a couple on burglary charges after catching them with a welder stolen from a Bryan business Tuesday.
Curtis Washington, 26, and Jasma Eunique Hawkins, 23, both of Bryan, were arrested on charges of burglary of a building and unlawful use of a criminal instrument.
An officer stated in a police report that he noticed a vehicle backed up to Gooseneck Trailers at 4400 East Texas 21 around 10 p.m., and the trunk was open with a piece of equipment in it. The vehicle drove off, sped up as the officer turned around to get behind it and pulled in front of a home in the 1300 block of Lincoln Street, where Washington exited from the passenger side and ran into the home, according to the police report.
Hawkins, the driver, told the officer Washington, her boyfriend, had gotten sick at the business and ran away. The officer stated that Washington came back outside, out of breath and with fresh mud on his pants, and told him he needed to move his patrol car.
Hawkins said she didn't know where the piece of welding equipment with mud on it in the trunk came from, and Washington said he was going to do some welding and it was not stolen. The officer said a part of the chain link fence where the vehicle had been parked was cut and peeled back, and there was a glove and a pair of bolt cutters in the car.
After further questioning, Hawkins said Washington took the welder from the business, according to the police report. The business owner said the welder that was worth about $3,000 had been inside a building with an open front, and it would cost about $250 to repair the fence, according to the report.
Burglary of a building is a state jail felony punishable by up to two years in jail and a fine up to $10,000. Unlawful use of a criminal instrument is misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine up to $4,000.
Washington and Hawkins remained in jail Wednesday in lieu of $9,000 bail each.
