DPS investigating wreck near Hearne that injured two drivers

Officials on Wednesday were investigating an accident on U.S. 190 that sent two drivers to area hospitals Tuesday - one with multiple broken bones and an injured spleen, a trooper said.

Joseph Wegwert of Bryan was traveling southbound on the inside lane of U.S. 190 (or Texas 6) in his 2008 Chevrolet pickup at 4:45 p.m. when a 2007 Toyota four-door car that was in the inside northbound lane of the highway veered into the inside southbound lane and struck the pickup, said Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Scott Swick.

The front left tire of the pickup came off and bounced into the northbound lanes of traffic and struck a 2009 Cadillac, Swick said.

Lameika Whitfield, 26, of Cameron was driving the Toyota. She was flown to Scott and White Hospital in Temple with major injuries, including multiple broken bones and injuries to her spleen, Swick said. Whitfield was in critical but stable condition Wednesday morning.

Wegwert, 25, was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Bryan with minor injuries and was released, Swick said. He said Whitfield and Wegwert were the only occupants in their vehicles and were wearing seatbelts.

The Cadillac received minor damage to the front quarter of the vehicle, and the driver was uninjured, Swick said.

The wreck occurred about 9 miles southeast of Hearne, just inside the county line.

Swick said the cause of the wreck was still under investigation, and no one had been cited as of Wednesday morning. Swick said he didn't believe there would be any criminal charges.
