Driver charged with evading police in car

A 24-year-old man faces a felony evading arrest charge after he told Bryan police he didn't pull over for an officer because he didn't have a driver's license.

Bryan resident Scott Lynn Cook was jailed Wednesday on charges of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, disregarding a stop sign, disregarding a red light, failure to signal a turn and failure to maintain financial responsibility.

A Bryan officer said he was patrolling at about 3:50 a.m. in the 1700 block of Jackson Street when he decided to follow Cook's vehicle. He said he tried to stop the car after Cook failed to use his turn signal and that's when he witnessed the other offenses, court documents state.

The officer said he was driving 10 mph over the 50 mph speed limit in an attempt to keep up with Cook, and stopped following Cook because it didn't meet the elements of the police department's pursuit policy. When police arrived at Cook's home, he told them he didn't stop because he was scared because he didn't have a driver's license and didn't want his vehicle to get towed, according to a police report.

Evading arrest or detention in a vehicle is a state jail felony punishable by up to two years in jail and a fine up to $10,000.

Bail had not been set for all his charges Wednesday morning.
