Leon head-on crash kills 1, hurts other

A head-on collision early Tuesday in Leon County left one man dead and another injured.

Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety said the accident happened at 6:10 a.m. on U.S. 79, about three miles north of Marquez.

Robert Oran Copeland, 28, of Donie was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:20 a.m.

According to the DPS, Copeland was attempting to pass another vehicle when he crashed head-on into a vehicle driven by Danny Edward Cupit, 39, of Marquez.

Cupit was taken to the East Texas Medical Center in Fairfield in fair condition.

Cupit was wearing his seat belt; Copeland was not, officials said. Officials said it was raining at the time of the crash.

Services for Copeland have been set for 2 p.m. Friday at Marquez Baptist Church. McCauley Funeral Home in Franklin is handling arrangements.
