Officials said they were investigating a head-on wreck near Normangee Thursday night that killed a couple and their three young children from College Station.
Amy Wise, 28, of Centerville was driving a 2000 Ford pickup westbound on OSR when she crossed the center stripe and struck a 1994 Chevrolet pickup that was traveling eastbound head on, a Department of Public Safety official said. The wreck occurred just before 5 p.m. six miles east of Normangee in Madison County, the DPS official said.
Ismael Perez, 41, was driving the Chevrolet pickup and died at the scene, along with the other passengers in his vehicle: Minerva Perez, 37, Josefina Perez, 4, Celeste Perez, 5, and Jeanette Perez, 7, according to the DPS. Wise was transported to St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan with non incapacitating injuries, according to the DPS.
The adults in the Chevrolet pickup were wearing their seatbelts; the children and Wise were not, according to the DPS.
The DPS official didn’t know what caused Wise to cross the center stripe.
Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Lew Plotts Jr., who declared the family dead at the scene, said firefighters had to use a jaws of life to extract them from their vehicle.
“I just know it was a terrible accident,” Plotts said, adding that the vehicles were "welded" together.
