Madisonville officer found dead at home

Texas Rangers on Friday were investigating the death of a Madisonville police officer who was found dead at home after police said he did not show up for work the prior day.

Officer Derric Malone, 43, was discovered in the 900 block of Mimosa Street in Madisonville, Chief Gary "Paco" Clendennen said. Texas Ranger Frank Malinak is investigating his death, but he found no evidence of foul play in his preliminary investigation, Clendennen said. Malinak could not immediately be reached for comment.

When Malone didn't report for his 4 p.m. shift, Sgt. J.D. Cornelius made several calls and sent text messages to Malone's cell phone, police said. Malone, who worked with the police department since May 2007, typically was on time, Lt. Norman McClure said. He also lives alone, and his co-workers became concerned.

Clendennen, Cornelius and McClure went to Malone's home at 4:45 p.m. and noticed both of Malone's vehicles parked nearby, police said. Clendennen said he knocked several times, and when no one answered, the Madisonville Fire Department was called to open the locked door.

Clendennen found Malone dead in his bathroom, police said.

McClure said the only health problem he knew of was that Malone had high blood pressure. An autopsy was ordered.

Malone's last shift before Thursday ended at 2 a.m. Sunday, McClure said. His final contact with police was mid-day Monday, and neighbors said they had not seen him for about two days.

Malone originally was from Jasper and that's where his funeral will be held, McClure said. He was divorced and had several children.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
