Man accused of assaulting, choking girlfriend

A 37-year-old College Station man remained jailed Tuesday on charges of assaulting his girlfriend and preventing her from calling police.

The man was arrested Monday on charges of assaulting a family/ household member with a previous conviction and interfering with an emergency call.

College Station police were dispatched to a disturbance in the 4000 block of Greens Prairie Road, and when en route, they were told that the victim was at a restaurant at the intersection of William D. Fitch and Texas 6. The 20-year-old woman requested an ambulance, and told police her boyfriend had placed his knee on her chest and sat down, choked her, punched her in the face and bit her on the legs.

She said the couple got into an argument after their baby woke up, and she tried to call police when it became violent, according to a police report. She told police the man took the phone away from her and broke it.

Her boyfriend told police the woman got angry when he turned the television off, and he was defending himself because she grabbed him by the mouth and had him on the ground, according to a police report. Police said the man's story didn't match the evidence.

The woman had a swollen lip and two bite marks on her thighs, one of which was bleeding, police said.

Because of his conviction in 1997, the assault charge is a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. Interfering with an emergency call is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine up to $4,000.

Bail was set at $12,000.
