Police said they arrested a 45-year-old man after he tried to steal meat by hiding it in his pants at a Bryan store Tuesday.
David Lee Davis Jr. of Bryan was arrested on a charge of theft of property less than $1,500 with two or more previous convictions, along with a parole violation warrant.
Police responded to a report of theft at Village Foods at 1760 Briarcrest Drive, where a store manager reported an employee alerted him to a man and woman -- who had taken meat from the store in the past -- putting meat items in a grocery cart, according to a police report. The manager watched Davis as he hid several meat products in his pants, then walk past cash registers without paying, according to a police report.
When Davis saw the manager approaching him, he ran back into the store and began removing meat and other items from his pants, according to a police report. He told the manager he was putting the items back and when the manager told him it was too late, he offered to pay for the items, according to the police report.
Davis tried several times to shove the manager and escape the store, but was unsuccessful, police said. An officer reported Davis revealed he had a package of sausage in his sock while being frisked.
Davis said a friend had talked him into taking the items so they could sell them to make money to buy narcotics, according to the police report. A store video shows Davis was with two women in the store, but they left unidentified while Davis was trying to dispose of the stolen goods, police said.
Davis is accused of taking $121.37 worth of items, including packages of meat and bottles of baby powder, baby oil gel lotion and bedtime bath lotion, according to the police report.
Because Davis was convicted of four counts of theft in 1991 and 1993, his theft charge is a state jail felony punishable by up to two years in jail and a fine up to $10,000.
He remained in jail Wednesday in lieu of $5,000 bail.
