Police said a 64-year-old man was taken for a medical evaluation after he rammed a mobile home and then charged at officers with his vehicle in Burleson County Wednesday.
Police received a call from a person who lives in the 5100 block of County Road 378 off of F.M. 2000 at 2:30 p.m., reporting that Thomas Starks was ramming the caller's mobile home with his vehicle, Sheriff Dale Stroud said. Starks owns the property and lives on the front part of it, police said.
When two deputies arrived and exited their patrol car in Starks' driveway, Starks was in his vehicle, Stroud said.
"He made a run at the deputies with his car," he said, adding that deputies were able to jump out of the way.
However, Starks -- who had a pistol in his hand -- threw the weapon on his dashboard as he backed up and was apparently preparing to attempt to hit the deputies again, he said. That's when the deputies opened fire at the front part of his vehicle, disabling it, he said.
Starks exited his vehicle and barricaded himself in his home, Stroud said.
"He screamed at them through the windows that he was armed and not to come in," he said.
The Burleson County SWAT team was activated, and part of the SWAT team had arrived when Starks came out of his house about an hour later, he said. Starks tried to go back into his home, but officers were able to detain him, Stroud said.
Starks was being held for medical evaluation and had not been charged in the incident as of Thursday morning, he said.
