Man accused of robbing Bryan store

Police said they arrested a 47-year-old man on charges of assaulting Bryan Wal-Mart employees in an attempt to escape the store with stolen items Wednesday.

Dennis Victor Blackmon of Bryan was arrested on charges of robbery and criminal trespass, along with two charges of theft from $50 to $500.

At 12:35 a.m. police responded to a report of robbery at Wal-Mart at 2200 Briarcrest Drive. A store protection agent told police he saw Blackmon hide a pair of reading glasses in his pocket, place ripped price tags under some jeans, eat a piece of chicken, and place items he put in his basket into plastic shopping bags before pushing his shopping cart past registers and out the front door without paying, according to a police report.

Two store protection agents stopped him outside the door and asked him to come back inside, but he shoved the employees back, police said. Blackmon was stopped again at his car, where he was held until police arrived and detained him.

Blackmon is accused of stealing $247.44 worth of items from the store, including shoes, bug spray, deodorant, medicine, a lighter, motor and gun oil, beer, chocolate milk, condoms, make-up, reading glasses, chicken and lingerie, according to the report. He had an active criminal trespass warning against him for the store property at the time of the robbery, police said.

Robbery is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. Criminal trespass and the theft charges are Class B misdemeanors punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a fine up to $2,000.

Blackmon remained in jail Thursday in lieu of $15,000 bail.
