Man dies after crashing into tree in Cameron, police say

A 28-year-old man died early Friday in Cameron after his vehicle crashed into a tree, authorities said.

A witness told police Sigfrid Mayer of College Station sped past her before crashing into the tree in the city park at the intersection of Fourth Street and Milam Avenue at 12:30 a.m., Cameron chief dispatcher Mary Jo Woods said. Mayer died at the scene, Woods said.

Mayer was the only occupant of the vehicle, which was “embedded in the tree,” Woods said.

The vehicle caught on fire after the crash and was destroyed, she said. Cameron volunteer firefighters responded to the wreck, she said.

Mayer moved from Anchorage, Alaska, to College Station about two months ago, Woods said.
