Navasota teacher arrested

A Navasota elementary school teacher has been arrested after a complaint that he touched a student inappropriately.

Navasota police arrested Roberto Andaverde, 34, at his home Friday, said Lt. Jorge De La Cruz. He was being held in the Grimes County Jail on Tuesday on $100,000 bail on a second-degree felony charge of indecency with a child by contact.

Andaverde had not yet been fired from the district Tuesday evening, but Interim Superintendent Rory Gesch said he wouldn't be returning.

Gesch wouldn't say how long Andaverde had been with the district or what grade he taught and said he couldn't discuss specifics of the case because of the ongoing investigation.

"We did have an incident happen on campus, and notified parents today," Gesch said Tuesday. "We will be taking steps to ensure he will not be returning to the district."

A news release sent out by the district said officials found out about the incident Thursday and immediately notified law enforcement officers and Child Protective Services.

At that time, Gesch placed Andaverde on administrative leave. After further review, however, district officials decided he would not be returning to teach in Navasota.

According to a page on the district's Web site, Andaverde taught kindergarten at John C. Webb Elementary School. A biography on the Web site said he had been teaching in Navasota for at least four years. The Web pages had been removed Tuesday afternoon.

Andaverde is from Tampico, Mexico, and received an alternative teaching certificate through a program in Monterrey, Mexico, according to a biography on the Web site.

A second-degree felony charge is punishable by up to 20 years behind bars and a fine not to exceed $20,000.
