One found dead in mobile home fire

Investigators late Monday were trying to identify a person found dead after a fire destroyed a mobile home in Brazos County earlier in the day, officials said.

Authorities said they were investigating what caused the fire off Lake Ridge Drive south of Millican and when it started.

A passerby notified authorities about the blaze about 6:40 a.m., but it was unclear when it actually started. Members of the South Brazos County Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene 20 minutes later.

"The home was completely destroyed at that point," said Sheriff Chris Kirk. "It had been burning for a while."

Emily Staples, the South Brazos County fire chief, said the charred remains were in a neighborhood filled mostly with trailer homes surrounded by a heavily wooded area. The closest residence was about 100 yards away. No one heard anything overnight, according to officials.

"It's in an untraveled area where people don't pass very often," Staples said.

Kirk said an autopsy will be performed to confirm the identity of the person found dead. The name will not be released until family members have been notified, he said, adding that the Texas Fire Marshal's Office was called to assist in the investigation.
