A Hearne man arrested on charges of marijuana possession and unlawful carrying of a weapon was released from the Brazos County Jail on Friday afternoon after posting $9,000 bail.
A Brazos County constable's deputy said he stopped Frederick Monroe Mercer, 28, on Thursday for speeding on Texas 6.
When he approached the vehicle, the deputy smelled marijuana, and Mercer gave the officer permission to search his vehicle, according to the police report. The search led the officer to find a little more than a pound of marijuana in a bag on the back seat, along with a loaded .40 caliber handgun, according to the police report.
Possession of marijuana in that amount is a state jail felony punishable by up to two years behind bars.
Unlawful carrying of a weapon is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine not to exceed $4,000.
