Police searching for driver that hit, killed pedestrian in Bryan

Police said a 48-year-old man died after a vehicle struck him while he was attempting to walk across Texas Avenue in Bryan Tuesday night, and they are searching for the driver, who left the scene.

Leonard W. Pierite of Bryan was transported to St. Joseph Regional Health Center, where he died from his injuries, Officer Jason James said.

Police responded to a report of a major accident around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of East 17th Street and North Texas Avenue, James said.

Pierite was attempting to cross Texas Avenue at the intersection with East 17th, where there isn't a crosswalk, James said. When he entered the roadway, witnesses said, a black pickup truck traveling south on North Texas Avenue struck him in the outside lane, James said.

The vehicle drove off south on Texas Avenue, he said.

The Bryan Police Department is looking for a black extended-cab pickup truck with front end damage. Authorities are asking for anyone with information about the accident to call Bryan police at 209-5316 or Crime Stoppers at 775-TIPS.
