Jewett police are looking for at least two men who robbed a check-cashing store in the town's Windmill Plaza on Friday.
Police Chief Marty Navarro said the store's owner, John Lucas, tried to resist when a man pulled a gun on him around 10:40 a.m., and another man entered and knocked him to the floor before tying him up.
The gun looked like a semiautomatic handgun, possibly a 9 mm, Navarro said.
The first man held the gun on Lucas while the other took money from the cashier's drawer, Navarro said.
The pair left with an undisclosed amount of money and some of Lucas' personal belongings.
Lucas was able to untie himself and call 911, Navarro said.
The merchant was treated at the scene for a minor injury.
"Other than that, he was pretty lucky," Navarro said.
Lucas was able to provide a description of one man, and police said surveillance footage from nearby businesses suggested that more than two people could be involved.
One of the robbers is described as Hispanic, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 160 pounds. He had a mustache and had bushy hair sticking out from a baseball cap. He was wearing blue jeans and a blue-and-white striped shirt at the time of the robbery.
It's unclear whether the men left on foot or by vehicle, Navarro said.
