Texas A&M student dies in wreck near Hearne

A 19-year-old Texas A&M University student died near Hearne after she lost control of her car and broadsided a pickup Thursday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Serena Swanland, of College Station, died at the scene, a DPS official said.

Swanland was driving her 2008 Kia four-door car north on U.S. 190, just north of Old Bryan Highway in Robertson County at 5:52 p.m., according to the DPS. She lost control, entered into a side skid, crossed into the southbound lanes of U.S. 190, and broadsided a 2005 Ford pickup driven by Gene Allen Mullenberg, according to the DPS.

Swanland was alone in her vehicle and was not wearing her seatbelt, according to the DPS. Mullenberg, 61, and his wife, Pamela Mullenburg, 58, who was in his truck with him, were in good condition at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan. The couple from Grand Prairie were wearing their seatbelts.

The DPS official said she did not know why Swanland lost control. Trooper Matthew Sliva worked the accident and was not immediately available for further details.
