College Basketball Roundup

MEN

No. 4 Duke 81, Virginia Tech 64: BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Kyle Singler scored 10 of his 16 points during an 18-9 run that gave No. 4 Duke some breathing room early in the second half and the Blue Devils beat Virginia Tech 81-64 on Thursday night.

The Blue Devils (16-1, 4-0 ACC) won their sixth straight game and for the third time in the past five drama-filled meetings with the Hokies.

Virginia Tech (11-8, 2-3), which has beaten No. 7 Duke in Blacksburg and No. 5 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium since joining the ACC, also lost on the Blue Devils' famous court on a 40-foot heave by Sean Dockery to beat the buzzer in 2005.

This time, Singler and the Blue Devils didn't let it get that close, taking charge with an impressive burst to open the second half and keeping the raucous crowd at Cassell Coliseum waiting to see if the overmatched Hokies could get back in it.

Arizona 76, No. 6 Washington St. 64: TUCSON, Ariz. -- Jerryd Bayless scored 23 points and Chase Budinger had 22 for Arizona.

The Wildcats were 12-of-21 (57 percent) from beyond the arc, a season high for 3-pointers. Budinger hit four while Bayless and Nic Wise both had three.

The Wildcats (13-6, 3-3 Pac-10) handed Washington State its first double-digit loss since a 14-point defeat at Utah on Dec. 2, 2005.

Kyle Weaver and Aron Baynes scored 15 points each for the Cougars (16-2, 4-2).

After opening the season with 14 straight victories, the Cougars have lost two of four, with the other loss coming at No. 8 UCLA on Jan. 12.

No. 10 Michigan St. 78, Northwestern 62: EVANSTON, Ill. -- Raymar Morgan scored 23 points and Drew Neitzel added 20 for Michigan State in one of its best shooting performances of the season.

The Spartans (17-2, 5-1 Big Ten) were a season-best 11-of-18 from 3-point range and were 29-for-48 from the field overall in winning for the 14th time in 15 games.

Neitzel went 6-of-10 on 3-pointers, and freshman Chris Allen was 4-of-5 from long range while tying his season high with 17 points.

Morgan hit nine of 11 shots and grabbed eight rebounds as Michigan State won its third straight since a 43-36 loss at Iowa.

Craig Moore was 7-of-14 from 3-point range and finished with 28 points for the Wildcats (6-10, 0-6).

No. 15 Butler 63, Loyola of Chicago 50: INDIANAPOLIS -- Reserve forward Pete Campbell scored 15 points, and Mike Green added 13 to lead Butler.

The Bulldogs (18-2, 7-2 Horizon League) took charge in the first half with a 15-2 run, and never allowed Loyola of Chicago (6-13, 2-7) to seriously challenge after the opening minutes.

J.R. Blount had 16 points for Loyola.

Freshman Matt Howard dominated the middle for Butler with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The status of Campbell, Green and Julian Betko -- all seniors -- was in question Thursday morning after each had received a ticket to Wednesday night's Iowa-Indiana game in Bloomington. Iowa is coached by former Butler coach Todd Lickliter.

After checking with officials from the Horizon League and the NCAA, all three were cleared to play.

No. 23 Xavier 69, No. 16 Dayton 43: CINCINNATI -- Stanley Burrell scored 13 points and led Xavier's man-to-man defense that dug in from the opening tip and never let up.

The Musketeers (16-4, 4-1) pushed the lead to double digits in the opening minutes and were never threatened in their most lopsided victory over Dayton in nine years.

It was the second straight loss for Dayton (14-3, 2-2).

Burrell and any nearby defender hounded Brian Roberts, who averages 20 points a game, into a 2-for-5 effort from the field for a season-low five points.

Marcus Johnson led Dayton with 12 points.

Washington 72, No. 24 Arizona St. 61: TEMPE, Ariz. -- Jon Brockman had 21 points and 15 rebounds and Washington handed Arizona State its first home loss of the season.

The Huskies beat the Sun Devils for the 11th consecutive time, the longest such streak in the Pac-10.

Arizona State (14-4, 4-2) shot 32 percent (17-for-53), including 5-for-24 from 3-point range.

Freshman standout James Harden, playing despite a strained right groin, scored 17 points for Arizona State but had only four in the second half. He twice missed the front end of a 1-and-1 down the stretch, once with his team down 53-47 and again when the Sun Devils trailed 57-50.

After the second miss, Ryan Appleby made a 3-pointer to give the Huskies (12-7, 3-3) a 60-50 lead with 3:41 to play.

WOMEN

No. 2 Tennessee 98, Arkansas 55: KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Angie Bjorklund scored a career-high 29 points, Candace Parker had 24 and Tennessee tied a team record with 13 3-pointers in a 98-55 rout of Arkansas on Thursday night.

The margin of victory was the largest of the season for the second-ranked Lady Vols (17-1, 5-0 SEC), who shot 50 percent from the field and 43.3 percent from behind the arc.

Bjorklund tied Tennessee's 3-point record for the third time this season, hitting 7 of 16.

Brereton finished with 13 points. Sarah Pfeifer led the Lady Razorbacks (16-4, 1-4) with 16 points and Brittney Vaughn had 11.

No. 9 LSU 79, No. 25 Auburn 59: AUBURN, Ala. -- Sylvia Fowles had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Quianna Chaney made six 3-pointers and had 21 points to lead LSU past Auburn.

The Lady Tigers (15-3, 4-0 SEC) shot 55 percent and led by 21 points at halftime to continue an impressive romp through the league.

Erica White added 15 points and five assists for LSU.

Sherell Hobbs led Auburn (13-6, 1-3) with 20 points while Jordan Greenleaf added 12. DeWanna Bonner, the league's No. 2 scorer, managed just five points along with 10 rebounds.

No. 10 Duke 73, No. 23 Georgia Tech 47: ATLANTA -- Chante Black had 16 points and 13 rebounds and Duke beat Georgia Tech for the 28th straight time.

Abby Waner scored 15 for Duke (15-4 overall, 4-1 ACC).

Chioma Nnamaka led Georgia Tech (16-4, 3-3) with 13 points. Tech, ranked in the top 25 this week for the first time since 1993, had won 18 straight at home.

No. 13 Old Dominion 85, Northeastern 51: BOSTON -- Jessica Canady scored 28 points and Old Dominion stayed perfect in the Colonial Atletic Association.

Old Dominion (15-3, 6-0) won its ninth straight game. The Lady Monarchs have won all three games they have played against the Huskies (5-11, 0-6) in their brief series.

Lucia Pablos led Northeastern with 10 points. Jasmine Crew and Shaleyse Smallwood added nine each.

Minnesota 79, No. 15 Ohio St. 70: MINNEAPOLIS -- Leslie Knight scored a career-high 33 points and Minnesota stopped Big Ten-leading Ohio State's winning streak at six.

Emily Fox added 16 points and led an aggressive effort by the Gophers (14-6, 5-3) on both ends of the court that brought them within one game of first place in the crowded conference race.

Ashlee Trebilcock scored 25 points, and Jantel Lavender added 21 points for three-time defending Big Ten champion Ohio State (15-4, 6-2).

No. 17 Georgia 82, Florida 55: GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Ashley Houts scored a career-high 25 points to help Georgia beat Florida, giving coach Andy Landers his 700th career win.

Houts scored 21 of her 25 points in the first half while senior Tasha Humphrey added 23 points in the win for the Lady Bulldogs (16-3 overall, 3-2 SEC), who snapped a three-game road losing streak.

Landers became the eighth coach to reach the milestone at a four-year institution. He joins Tennessee's Pat Summitt and Texas' Jody Conradt as the only coaches to record 700 wins at one school. Landers is now 700-218 in his 29th season at Georgia.

Brittaney Thomas led the Gators (13-6, 2-2) with 18 points off the bench.
