Five area teenagers to get scholarships

Five area teens will receive scholarships from the universities of their choice through the National Merit Scholarship Competition, officials announced Tuesday.

Three students were awarded scholarships to attend Texas A&M University. Robert Cheyne Jr., Nathan Cooner and Ali El-Halwagi are students at A&M Consolidated High School.

Cheyne plans to major in mechanical engineering while Cooner and El-Halwagi will study business and chemical engineering, respectively.

Benjamin Bracher, a senior at Bryan High School who hopes to pursue a career in law or politics, will attend Southwestern University.

College Station senior Ellen Smith will attend Abilene Christian University, where she hopes to major in English.

The local students are among 2,800 winners in the first round of college-financed scholarships announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. on Tuesday.

Officials from sponsor colleges select scholarship recipients from a list of finalists in the National Merit program. Students receive between $500 to $2,000 annually for a maximum of four years of undergraduate study.
