College Station school board members on Tuesday picked Greens Prairie Elementary as the name of a new school set to open in 2011.
The decision came down to two options; the other choice was Prairie Trail Elementary School.
Superintendent Eddie Coulson said administrators chose to recommend Greens Prairie because that is the street the school is on and it fits well with other school names.
College Station schools cannot be named after people, but can be named after a landmark, the street the school is on or a surrounding subdivision, according to district policy.
Also Tuesday, trustees unanimously approved the 2010-11 District Improvement Plan. The plan outlines goals and objectives for the district in regards to academic success and student achievement.
Trustees commended Coulson for successfully leading the district through the 2009-2010 District Improvement Plan, particularly with improving TAKS scores and closing performance disparities.
Since 2005, nearly all TAKS scores in College Station have reflected a narrowing in the achievement gap between white and minority group students, according to district data.
Board Vice President Randall Pitcock said that is an indication that district objectives are being met.
"I think the kids see the results in their own success, and hopefully that's going to encourage them," he said.
Coulson said he attributed the improvements to a hard-working staff and teachers who have been committed to sticking to curriculum assignments specific to their grade level.
"We try to be strategic about the things that we do and make sure resources are being used correctly," he said. "We've really tried to send a unified message that this is what we've been working on as a district."
