Third and Short August 20

NBA

BOSTON -- Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, the last player to hit for the Triple Crown, was resting comfortably Tuesday night after having triple bypass heart surgery.

Yastrzemski, who turns 69 on Friday, had the operation at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he underwent tests after experiencing chest pains in the morning, said his spokesman, Dick Gordon.

The popular Yaz was an 18-time All-Star and spent his entire career with the Boston Red Sox, taking over left field for Ted Williams in 1961 and playing through 1983.

He won the Triple Crown that year, hitting .326 with 44 home runs and 121 RBIs. Behind the AL MVP, the Red Sox won their first pennant since 1946, but lost the World Series in Game 7. Yaz finished with 452 career home runs and 1,844 RBIs. He had 3,419 lifetime hits and batted .285.

NEW YORK -- Billy Wagner has more pain and swelling in his pitching elbow, and the New York Mets' All-Star closer is out indefinitely.

Wagner had an MRI exam Tuesday that revealed additional inflammation in his left elbow -- an alarming sign. The NL East leaders don't know when Wagner might be able to return to the mound, if at all, this season.

The Mets had hoped to activate Wagner from the disabled list Monday in Pittsburgh. But he felt discomfort in his elbow after throwing a simulated game Saturday and was sent back to New York for further evaluation.

LOS ANGELES -- Greg Maddux is back in Los Angeles for another stretch drive. The Dodgers announced Tuesday that they have reacquired Maddux and cash considerations from San Diego. The Padres will receive two minor league players to be named or cash considerations.

The 42-year-old Maddux first came to the Dodgers late in the 2006 season, when he went 6-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 12 starts to help them win a wild-card berth.

Maddux is 6-9 with a 3.99 ERA this season, and has 353 career wins.

College Basketball

INDIANAPOLIS -- New Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean got the job security he wanted, signing a 10-year contract worth at least $23.6 million.

The deal includes an annual base salary of $600,000 and additional payments for promotional work, school officials said Tuesday. He will receive $1.4 million this season from outside income, a total that will increase slightly each year of the contract. Crean could earn up to $685,000 in bonuses if he wins a national championship.

His contract includes a provision that allows Indiana to fire him if he or his staff commit NCAA infractions.

When hired in April to replace the ousted Kelvin Sampson, Crean agreed to an eight-year contract, but the university added two more years last month.

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -- North Carolina junior Ty Lawson has pleaded guilty to underage drinking and driving. The 20-year-old Lawson appeared in court Tuesday after completing community service and other terms of his plea agreement. Prosecutors agreed to drop charges of violating a noise ordinance and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

Lawson was arrested in June during a traffic stop in Chapel Hill after registering a 0.03 blood-alcohol level. Although the legal limit for driving in North Carolina is 0.08, Lawson was arrested because he was under 21, the legal age for consuming alcohol.

College Football

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Former Oklahoma State running back Thurman Thomas will be honored during the Bedlam football game this year as part of his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

The hall of fame attempts to bring each inductee back to his former school for an on-field salute and the National Football Foundation says Thomas' ceremony is scheduled for the Nov. 29 game against Oklahoma.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sworn affidavits in a federal lawsuit implicate former Marshall football coach Bob Pruett in an academic scandal and a jobs program for athletes that drew NCAA violations.

The NCAA sanctioned Marshall in 2001 but did not name Pruett. Marshall was placed on four years' probation and lost football and basketball scholarships for violating NCAA rules.

The affidavits are part of a 5-year-old federal lawsuit filed by David Ridpath, Marshall's former NCAA compliance officer.

Ridpath was fired in 2003. His lawsuit accuses Marshall, Pruett and others of using him as a scapegoat.

Pruett is now an assistant coach at Virginia.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Clay Bennett's ownership group has reached a final settlement with the city of Seattle allowing the former SuperSonics franchise to move to Oklahoma City.

Attorneys filed a document Tuesday in Seattle federal court noting that the parties had agreed to pay their own court costs after reaching the settlement.

Bennett announced last month that a settlement was being negotiated that would involve him making a payment of up to $75 million to Seattle to get out of the final two years of a lease at KeyArena.

At that time, he had expected the settlement to be finalized by Aug. 1. Instead, a time extension was sought from the court and terms weren't reached until now.
