Atkinson Toyota Fishing Report

AROUND THE STATE

AUSTIN (AP) -- Here is the weekly fishing report as compiled for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for Dec. 31. (Report also available on Web as www.txfishing.com.)

CENTRAL

BASTROP: Water lightly stained. Black bass are fair on pumpkinseed crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics. Crappie are fair on minnows and blue/white tube jigs. Channel and blue catfish are slow. Yellow catfish are slow.

BELTON: Water clear; 62 degrees; 2.63' low. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are slow. Yellow catfish are slow.

BROWNWOOD: Water stained; 53 degrees; 4.85' low. Black bass are fair on chartreuse/black jigs, small crankbaits, and watermelon red 4" worms over brush piles in 1020 feet. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are fair on Li'l Fishies and watermelon red crankbaits under lighted docks at night. Crappie are good on Li'l Fishies and minnows over brush piles in 1020 feet. Channel catfish are fair on stinkbait, minnows and shrimp in 1020 feet. Yellow catfish are slow.

BUCHANAN: Water clear; 62 degrees; 15.60' low. Black bass are good on black Curb's hair jigs, watermelon red JDC curl tail grubs on jigheads, and suspending crankbaits over deeper rock piles along ledges and points in 820 feet. Striped bass are good drifting live shad, and jigging Spoiler Shad swim baits and Pirk Minnows near Garrett Island in 2840 feet. White bass are slow to fair jigging Tiny Traps and Pirk Minnows. Crappie are slow on live minnows over brush piles. Channel catfish are slow. Yellow and blue catfish are slow.

CANYON LAKE: Water clear; 61 degrees; 11.02' low. Black bass are good on Texas rigged Red Shad worms, pumpkin JDC drop shot worms, and tubes on jigheads in stickups in 615 feet. Striped bass are fair jigging Pirk Minnows and trolling Gizz 4's or Shad Raps on down riggers over humps in the lower end of the lake in 4060 feet. White bass are fair but small on blade baits along main lake bluffs. Smallmouth bass are very good on Tomato Red JDC grubs, smoke/red flake tubes on jigheads, and smoke drop shot worms along main lake points and bluff ledges. Crappie are slow. Channel catfish are slow. Yellow and blue catfish are slow.

COLEMAN: Water clear; 63 degrees; 5.69' low. Black bass are good on watermelon Rat-L-Traps and crankbaits. Hybrid striper are fair on minnows and white striper jigs. Crappie are good on minnows. Channel and blue catfish are good on stinkbait, nightcrawlers, and frozen shrimp. Yellow catfish are slow.

COLORADO RIVER: (At Colorado Bend State Park) Water clear. Black bass are slow. Striped bass are slow. White bass are fair on minnows. Crappie are slow. Catfish are good on nightcrawlers, stinkbait, and shrimp in deep holes.

FAYETTE: Water clear; 63 degrees. Black bass are slow to fair on Carolina rigged soft plastics in 1522 feet on points. Channel and blue catfish are slow.

GRANBURY: Water clear; 2.23' low. Black bass are good on watermelon red/blue flake soft plastics and Rat-L-Traps. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows. Catfish are good on frozen shrimp, stinkbait, and liver.

GRANGER: Water murky; 50 degrees; 3.52' low. Black bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows upriver at night. Blue catfish are good on shad and prepared baits. Yellow catfish are slow.

LBJ: Water stained; 63 degrees; 0.16' low. Black bass are fair to good on black/blue Curb's jigs and green pumpkin tubes on docks. Striped bass are slow. White bass are fair to good on silver Pirk Minnows and Spoiler Shads in the channel near the power plant. Crappie are fair on minnows in brush piles under heated docks. Channel catfish are fair on minnows and nightcrawlers. Yellow and blue catfish are slow.

NAVARRO MILLS: Water murky; 52 degrees; 2.87' low. Black bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are good on minnows in 9 feet. Channel and blue catfish are fair on shrimp and stinkbait. Yellow catfish are slow.

PROCTOR: Water stained; 62 degrees; 4.61' low. Black bass are fair on chartreuse spinnerbaits and soft plastics. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and chartreuse tube jigs. Channel and blue catfish are good on frozen shad and shrimp. Yellow catfish are slow.

SOMERVILLE: Water fairly clear; 2.90' low. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and green and black tube jigs. Channel and blue catfish are excellent on bloodbait. Yellow catfish are slow.

STILLHOUSE: Water clear; 62 degrees; 4.70' low. Black bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are slow. Yellow catfish are slow.

TRAVIS: Water clear; 64 degrees; 25.31' low. Black bass to 3 pounds are good on chrome jigging spoons, black jigs, and smoke grubs in 2845 feet. Striped bass to 5 pounds are fair on minnows and chrome spoons in 3040 feet. White bass are good on minnows and chrome jigging spoons in 3550 feet. Crappie are good on minnows and pink and white tube jigs in 3848 feet. Channel and blue catfish to 10 pounds are fair on nightcrawlers and cut bait in 3248 feet. Yellow catfish are slow.

WALTER E. LONG: Water stained; 65 degrees. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are good on minnows. Channel and blue catfish are good on nightcrawlers and shrimp. Yellow catfish are slow.

WHITNEY: Water clear; 9.74' low. Black bass are fair on watermelon red spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and Rat-L-Traps. Striped bass are fair on minnows and chartreuse striper jigs. White bass are fair on minnows. Crappie are fair on minnows and blue tube jigs. Catfish are good on frozen shrimp, nightcrawlers, and stinkbait.

NORTHEAST

ATHENS: Water lightly stained, 48-53 degrees; 0.56' low. Black bass are fair on spinnerbaits, flukes and Rat-L-Traps. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs fished over brush piles. Bream are fair to good on live worms. Catfish are good on live worms and prepared bait.

BOB SANDLIN: Water fairly clear; 47-54 degrees; 0.37' low. Black bass are fair on spinnerbaits, Senkos, wacky rigs and Texas rigs. White bass are fair to good on slabs. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair around creek channels with timber.

BRIDGEPORT: Water fairly clear; 47-52 degrees; 7.76' low. Black bass are fair on shad pattern crankbaits, Rat-L-Traps and 4" Yum Dingers. White bass and hybrid striper are fair on slabs and live bait. Catfish are fair to good on cut bait.

CADDO: Water off color; 48-54 degrees; 0.55' high. Black bass are fair on Senkos, flukes, spinnerbaits and Texas rigs. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair to good on nightcrawlers and cut shad.

CEDAR CREEK: Water lightly stained; 48-54 degrees; 2.33' low. Black bass are fair on medium running shad pattern crankbaits, Texas rigs and drop shot rigs. White bass are good on slabs. Hybrid striper are fair on live shad and large slabs jigged vertically. Crappie are fair to good on minnows. Catfish are fair drifting cut shad.

COOPER: Water lightly stained; 47-53 degrees; 6.16' low. Black bass are fair on Texas rigged blue fleck worms, drop shot rigs and slow-rolled spinnerbaits. Crappie are fair to good on jigs and minnows over brush piles. White bass are good on slabs. Hybrid striper are fair to good on slabs and live shad. Catfish are fair on nightcrawlers and prepared bait.

FAIRFIELD: Water fairly clear; 76-88 degrees. No report available.

FORK: Water lightly stained; 48-54 degrees; 0.81' low. Black bass are fair to good on slow-rolled spinnerbaits, spoons and Texas rigged 10" Power Worms. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are good on prepared baits under roosting cormorants.

GRAPEVINE: Water off color; 48-53 degrees; 7.16' low. Black bass are fair on jigs, Texas rigs, crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. White bass are good on slabs. Catfish are fair to good on cut bait and nightcrawlers.

JOE POOL: Water off color; 48-53 degrees; 2.54' low. Black bass are slow to fair on Texas rigs, spinnerbaits and wacky rigs. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs over brush piles. White bass are good on slabs. Catfish are fair to good on nightcrawlers and prepared baits.

LAKE O' THE PINES: Water stained; 47-53 degrees; 0.51' high. Black bass are slow to fair on Texas rigs, weightless flukes or 5" Yum Dingers and Rat-L-Traps. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are good on nightcrawlers and cut shad. Bream are fair on red wigglers.

LAVON: Water stained; 48-54 degrees; 4.43' low. Black bass are fair on Texas rigs, spinnerbaits and shallow running crankbaits. White bass are good on slabs. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs around bridge columns. Catfish are fair to good on cut shad and nightcrawlers.

LEWISVILLE: Water off color; 47-53 degrees; 3.92' low. Black bass are fair on slow-rolled spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, Texas rigs and Carolina rigs. White bass and hybrid striper are fair to good on slabs. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are good on cut shad and prepared baits.

MARTIN CREEK: 3.05' low. No report available.

MONTICELLO: Water fairly clear; 75-88 degrees; 0.3' low. Black bass are fair to good on topwaters early, later switching to weightless flukes, Texas rigs, spinnerbaits and chrome Rat-L-Traps. Crappie are good on minnows. Catfish are fair to good on prepared bait.

PALESTINE: Water lightly stained; 47-53 degrees; 0.23' low. Black bass are fair on Texas rigs, jigs and crankbaits. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair on prepared bait. Bream are fair on worms. Hybrid striper and white bass are fair to good on slabs.

RAY HUBBARD: Water off color; 47-53 degrees; 1.34' low. Black bass are fair on spinnerbaits, crankbaits and Texas rigs. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. White bass are fair to good on slabs. Hybrid striper are fair on slabs. Catfish are fair to good on cut shad and chartreuse (use Worm-Glo) nightcrawlers.

RAY ROBERTS: Water stained; 46-50 degrees; 2.43' low. Black bass are slow to fair on 3/4 oz. slow-rolled Booyah spinnerbaits. Crappie are good on 1/16 oz. jigs and Road Runners walking the creek banks. White bass are excellent on 3/8 and 1/2 oz. CC Jigging Spoons. No reports on catfish.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS: Water off color; 46-52 degrees; 4.39' low. Black bass are fair on medium running shad pattern crankbaits, Texas rigs and spinnerbaits. White bass and hybrid striper are fair to good on slabs and live shad. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are good on nightcrawlers and cut shad.

TAWAKONI: Water lightly stained; 47-53 degrees; 4.75' low. Black bass are fair on spinnerbaits, jigs and Texas rigs. Crappie are fair on minnows. White bass are fair on slabs. Striped bass and hybrid striper are fair on live shad and slabs. Catfish are fair on prepared bait.

TEXOMA: Water off color; 46-52 degrees; 0.55' low. Black bass are fair on chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and Texas rigs. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. Striped bass are fair to good on live shad and Storm WildEyes. Catfish are fair to good on chartreuse (use Worm-Glo) nightcrawlers and cut shad.

WEATHERFORD: Water lightly stained; 47-52 degrees; 5.96' low. Black bass are fair on Texas rigs, chatterbaits and wacky rigs. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs in the crappie house. White bass are fair to good on slabs. Catfish are fair on nightcrawlers and prepared bait.

WRIGHT PATMAN: Water lightly stained; 48-54 degrees; 3.96' high. Black bass are fair flukes, Texas rigs and slow rolled spinnerbaits. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair to good on prepared bait and cut shad.

SOUTH

AMISTAD: Water clear; 60 degrees; 1.33' high. Black bass are slow. Striped bass are slow. White bass are fair on slabs in 50 feet. Catfish are fair on cheesebait and stinkbait. Yellow catfish are fair on trotlines and drop lines baited with live perch. Everyone in the boat must have a Mexico fishing license (if fishing the Mexico side) whether fishing or not.

BRAUNIG: Water stained; 65 degrees. Black bass are good on spinnerbaits, dark soft plastic worms, and minnows in the reeds and near the dam. Striped bass are good on liver and shad, and on spoons in deeper water. Redfish are fair on perch, shad, and silver spoons, and on tilapia, crawfish, perch, and shad near Dead Tree Point. Channel and blue catfish are excellent on liver, shrimp, perch, and shad in 2030 feet.

CALAVERAS: Water stained; 65 degrees. Black bass are good on dark soft plastic worms, live minnows, and crankbaits around reed beds and near the dam. Striped bass are good on Rat-L-Traps near the dam in 1520 feet, and on chicken livers and shad along the shoreline. Redfish are fair on live perch, shad, tilapia, and crawfish. Crappie are slow. Channel catfish are excellent on liver, shrimp, and nightcrawlers. Blue catfish are good on liver and nightcrawlers. Yellow catfish are slow.

CHOKE CANYON: Water lightly stained; 65 degrees; 5.26' low. Black bass to 5 pounds are good on heavy jigs and large soft plastic lizards in the grass, and fair on crankbaits. White bass are fair on minnows upriver. Crappie are slow but some large ones caught on minnows. Drum are fair on live worms. Channel and blue catfish are good on punchbait in 27 feet. Yellow catfish are slow.

COLETO CREEK: Water clear; 67 degrees (75 degrees at discharge); 3.56' low. Black bass are slow. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are good on live perch and bloodbait in 1215 feet. Yellow catfish are good on trotlines baited with live perch in 1215 feet.

FALCON: Water clear; 59 degrees. Black bass are slow. Striped bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are good on shrimp and cut bait. Yellow catfish are slow. Everyone in the boat must have a Mexico fishing license (if fishing the Mexico side) whether fishing or not.

SOUTHEAST

CONROE: Water murky; 1.09' low. Black bass are fair on watermelon red and pumpkinseed spinnerbaits and Rat-L-Traps in 1530 feet. Striped bass are good on minnows and white striper jigs. Crappie are fair on minnows and blue tube jigs. Catfish are good on stinkbait and frozen shrimp.

GIBBONS CREEK: Water clear. Black bass are fair on watermelon red spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and Rat-L-Traps. Crappie are fair on minnows and blue tube jigs. Catfish are good on frozen shrimp and stinkbait.

HOUSTON COUNTY: Water stained; 53 degrees; 0.56' high. Black bass to 4 pounds are good on watermelon soft plastics on the north side of the dam in 14 feet. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Bream are fair on live worms near grass beds. Channel and blue catfish are slow.

LIVINGSTON: Water fairly clear; 62 degrees; 0.03' low. Black bass are fair on crankbaits. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are good on minnows. Blue catfish are good on trotlines baited with shad. Yellow catfish are slow.

SAM RAYBURN: Water lightly stained; 65 degrees; 6.79' low. Black bass are good on watermelon red and watermelon gold soft plastics, crankbaits, and Rat-L-Traps. White bass are fair on live minnows and chartreuse spoons. Crappie are fair on minnows. Bream are fair on worms. Catfish are good on stinkbait, frozen shrimp, and liver.

STEINHAGEN: 0.80' high. No report available.

TOLEDO BEND: Water clear; 65 degrees; 3.68' low. Black bass are good on chartreuse blue and chartreuse green soft plastics, spinnerbaits, and Rat-L-Traps. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and blue tube jigs over brush piles. Bream are fair on worms. Channel and blue catfish are good on nightcrawlers, shrimp, and stinkbait. Yellow catfish are slow.

PANHANDLE

GREENBELT: Water stained; 43 degrees; 28.14' low. Black bass are fair on black neon jigs and live bait suspended in trees and on shad-colored crankbaits along secondary points and creek channels. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows. White bass are good on live bait and silver crankbaits. Smallmouth bass are fair on live bait. Walleye are good on live bait and crankbaits. Catfish are fair on cut and prepared bait.

MACKENZIE: Water lightly stained; 44 degrees; 76.52' low. Black bass are fair on live bait. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. White and striped bass are fair on minnows and chrome jerkbaits. Smallmouth bass are fair on live bait. Walleye are fair on minnows and crankbaits. Catfish are fair on live bait.

MEREDITH: Water stained; 42 degrees; 73.51' low. Black bass are fair on shad-colored crankbaits, slow-rolled spinnerbaits and minnows along secondary points and rocky humps. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows. White bass are good on live bait and silver crankbaits. Smallmouth bass are slow on live bait. Walleye are fair on live bait. Channel catfish are fair on cut bait.

PALO DURO: Water stained; 38 degrees; 52.55' low. Black bass are slow on live bait. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows. Smallmouth bass are slow. Walleye are fair on live bait. Channel catfish are fair on minnows and prepared bait.

WEST

ALAN HENRY: Water lightly stained; 52 degrees; 0.15' low. Black bass are fair on shad-colored chatterbaits, black/blue jigs and minnows suspended in trees. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair on live and cut bait.

ARROWHEAD: Water lightly stained; 47 degrees; 6.16' low. Black bass are fair on shallow-running crankbaits and chatterbaits off secondary points. Crappie are fair on jigs fished deep off the derricks and at the state park. White bass are fair trolling crankbaits and Hell/Pet rigs. Blue catfish are fair on juglines with cut shad or cheese bait on flats in 10-14 feet.

COLORADO CITY: Water clear; 50 degrees; 6.26' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are slow. White bass are slow. Catfish are slow.

FT. PHANTOM HILL: Water clear; 51 degrees; 0.56' low. Black bass are slow on live bait. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. White bass are fair. Catfish are fair on prepared bait.

HUBBARD CREEK: Water lightly stained; 50 degrees; 2.61' low. Black bass are fair on slow-rolled white spinnerbaits along secondary points and through deeper timber. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows. White bass and hybrid striper are fair on live bait and crankbaits. Catfish are good on live bait.

NASWORTHY: Water lightly stained; 52 degrees. Black bass are slow on live bait. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. Redfish are fair. White and striped bass are fair. Catfish are fair on live bait.

OAK CREEK: Water lightly stained; 49 degrees; 2.48' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair on shad.

O.H. IVIE: Water lightly stained; 53 degrees; 12.03' low. Black bass are fair on shad-colored crankbaits, spinnerbaits and jerkbaits worked along secondary points, and on live baits along channels and drop-offs. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs. White bass are good on live bait and shad-colored crankbaits. Smallmouth bass are fair on live bait. Channel catfish are good on live and prepared bait.

POSSUM KINGDOM: Water stained; 55 degrees; 2.47' low. Black bass are fair on brown and red jigs along creek channel bends and main lake points in 15-22 feet. Crappie are fair on small white jigs and minnows worked along wood structure. White bass are fair on silver spoons and slabs along the river channel in 20-30 feet on the north end of the lake. Striped bass to 15 pounds are good on live shad below the dam. Catfish are good on live shad, cut bait and liver in the Rock Creek area. Trout are good on salmon eggs at the Highway 16 Bridge below the dam.

SPENCE: Water lightly stained; 53 degrees; 50.66' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are slow. White bass are slow. Striped bass and hybrid striper are slow. Catfish are slow.

STAMFORD: Water lightly stained; 52 degrees; 2.21' low. Black bass are fair on live bait along secondary points, creek channels and drop-offs. Crappie are fair on live bait and jigs. White and striped bass are fair on live bait. Catfish are fair on shad and minnows.

SWEETWATER: Water lightly stained; 53 degrees; 1.22' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. White bass are fair on live bait and blue back crankbaits. Catfish are fair on live bait.

WHITE RIVER: Water lightly stained; 47 degrees; 28.87' low. Black bass are fair on minnows and slow-rolled white spinnerbaits or chatterbaits in and along deeper timber. Crappie are good on jigs and minnows. Walleye are fair on live bait. Channel catfish are fair on shad.

WICHITA: Water lightly stained; 46 degrees; 0.88' low. Crappie are fair on minnows and live shad near the dam and pavilion poles. Hybrid striper to 7 pounds and white bass are fair on minnows and live shad near the dam and pavilion poles. Channel catfish are fair drifting shad or on trotlines.

COASTAL

NORTH SABINE: Trout are fair to good while working mud and shell and plastics. Trout and redfish are good in the river on shad.

SOUTH SABINE: Trout are fair to good while drifting shell and pods of shad. Bull redfish and sheepshead are good at the jetty on crabs and shrimp.

BOLIVAR: Trout are fair to good for waders tossing Corkies and Catch 5s. Redfish are good in Rollover Pass on natural baits.

TRINITY BAY: Trout are fair to good while working slicks and pods of mullet in 4-6 feet of water. Redfish are fair to good around the spillway and in the marsh on natural baits.

EAST GALVESTON BAY: Trout are fair to good while drifting shell in 4-6 feet of water on soft plastics. Redfish are good in the cuts and sloughs leading to the marsh on shrimp. Trout are fair to good on the edge of the Intracoastal.

WEST GALVESTON BAY: Trout are fair to good while drifting shell and mud. Sheepshead and sand trout are fair to good around rock groins and the causeway pilings.

TEXAS CITY: Flounder are fair on the drop-offs adjacent to the channel on shrimp and mullet. Redfish are fair to good in Moses Lake on mullet.

FREEPORT: Bull redfish are good at the jetty on shrimp and crabs. Trout are fair to good in Christmas Bay on shrimp over oyster shell.

EAST MATAGORDA: Trout are fair to good while drifting over shell on Bass Assassins, Norton Bull Minnows and Trout Killers. Trout are good on the south shoreline on Corkies, Bass Assassins, Sand Eels and Trout Killers worked in the guts.

MATAGORDA: Trout are fair to good while drifting mud and shell on Gulps under popping corks. Redfish are fair on the south shoreline of West Bay in the guts and cuts on Bass Assassins, Sand Eels and Trout Killers.

PORT O'CONNOR: Bull redfish are good at the jetty on crabs, finger mullet and live shrimp. Trout are good over shell and mud in San Antonio Bay on soft plastics and live shrimp.

ROCKPORT: Trout are fair to good over shell and mud for waders working topwaters and soft plastics in Copano Bay. Redfish are good on live shrimp under a cork while drifting the edges of the Estes Flats.

PORT ARANSAS: Bull redfish are good at the jetty and on the edge of the Intracoastal on crabs, finger mullet, cut-bait and fresh table shrimp. Whiting, sand trout and sheepshead are good around the rocks on shrimp.

CORPUS CHRISTI: Redfish are good on shrimp on the edges of the spoils in the Intracoastal and in the Humble Channel. Trout are fair to good from the piers at night on live bait.

BAFFIN BAY: Trout are good for waders tossing Corkies around the rocks and on the edge of the grass. Trout are fair to good under lights at night in the Land Cut on live shrimp and glow plastics.

PORT MANSFIELD: Trout are good around pods of bait on soft plastics and suspending baits. Redfish are good around East Cut on mullet and other natural baits.

SOUTH PADRE: Trout, redfish and black drum are fair to good on the edge of the flats on shrimp and Gulps. Snook and mangrove snapper are good in the Brownsville Ship Channel on shrimp and DOA Shrimp.

PORT ISABEL: Trout are good on the deeper flats and along the channel edges on DOA Shrimp, Gulps and shrimp. Redfish are good in Cullen Bay on gold spoons and small topwaters.
